Edward “Mac” McCarthy

Edward McCarthy of Bourne, after a brief illness, passed away peacefully March 10, 2019, surrounded by family and friends. He was born September 5, 1943 in Boston, Massachusetts, but since 1970 the community of Bourne had been Ed’s home. He is survived by his brother William (Suzanne) McCarthy of Burlington, Massachusetts; sister Mary Ann (John) Lawler of Miramar, Florida; and nieces, nephews and countless friends who will forever miss him.

Ed was a beloved coach, mentor, educator and guidance counselor in the Bourne school system. Known as “Mac” to all whose lives he touched, he will forever be remembered for his willingness to help anyone who needed helping.

To remain involved in the Bourne community after retiring in 2011 as a guidance counselor, Mac began work at Mezza Luna in Buzzards Bay so he would still be surrounded by and interacting with his “Cape Family” he loved so much.

To honor Ed’s life the family has arranged a memorial service from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M., Thursday March 14th at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home in Bourne. To further celebrate Ed’s life, the family invites you join them at his treasured Mezza Luna Restaurant in Buzzards Bay at 1 P.M. Friday, March 15 th . In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Mr. McCarthy was my math teacher in the late 70's. I remember him as a great teacher, with fairness, humor, and a dedication to do the best for his students. I think he was my driver's ed instructor too. That couldn't have been easy. My deepest sympathies to his family. He was a great man.

Mac was one of the people in my life that helped make High School tolerable for me. From letting you come in his office and vent about a bad day, extra help in math, giving advice to what classes to take to helping you get into college and talking sports! Mac was the best, available and cared so much about his students and their families. He will be greatly missed ♥️ ~ sincere condolences

Eddie Mac, a better friend you couldn’t have. A loyal and dedicated co-worker. So many times he went out of his way to help the youth of Bourne. A great help to me personally, for his annual assistance in building the schools’ master schedule. I’ll truly miss our monthly get togethers with Bill Gibbons, to catch up on new happenings and chat about fond memories. A special thanks to EJ, Mac was able to do what he loved the most right up until the end. God Bless our friend Mac.

God bless you Mr. Mccarthy and your family😥 Such a wonderful man, always had a smile and a kind word. And with all the kids he counseled, he always knew your name and made you feel like what you were saying was the most important thing to him. He will be missed 😢

I am so sorry to hear of Edwards passing. We met on chance going into the local stores in sagamore beach. He was always so kind and gracious when we spoke. I did not see him for a few weeks and was concerned..then I saw him going into his car and glad to know he was there. Ed was one of those few precious people you may never meet again in a lifetime. Kind; Compassionate; and always there to listen.
God Bless. and to his family..
