He was from Shrewsbury, Massachusetts and spoke of growing up in a wonderful town with his younger brother Richard. His Dad, Dick Smith, worked at the Geo. A Smith and Company, an auditor of banks and thrifts in central Massachusetts. The company had offices in downtown Worcester and was founded by George’s great-grandfather, George Eli Smith.
George graduated from Worcester Academy and attended the University of Pennsylvania graduating from the Wharton School in 1959. He was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity where he met his lifelong friend Morris Davies. He initially worked for Chase Manhattan in New York and later for colleges and universities throughout New England. He was a CPA and his expertise was non-profit finance. He worked at Boston University and was Controller at Dartmouth College, Brandeis University and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.
He met his beloved wife Joan Rittle in Philadelphia while she was attending nursing school at the Philadelphia Hospital School of Nursing. They married in 1962 at St. Mary’s Church in Shrewsbury and settled in Pocasset in the mid-60’s to raise their family. Later they lived in New Hampshire and Vermont before returning to Cape Cod to work and to retire.
George is survived by his wife Joan Rittle Smith, sons Tuck Smith and Kevin Smith and daughter Tracy Smith Ericson. He has two grandchildren, Riley and Samantha Smith.
He is predeceased by his parents Richard Percival Smith and Helen Hagan Smith and brother Richard Smith.
A funeral mass will be held at St. John the Evangelist in Pocasset at 10:00 am on May 5, 2021.
