John was the son of the late Muriel (Barrett) and Lawrence Bourke. He was born and raised in Portland, Maine, and graduated from Portland High in 1967 where he was the co-captain of the football team. After graduation, John joined the U.S. Navy, attended Great Lakes Naval Hospital Corps School in Illinois, and went on to serve as a corpsman in many hospitals. He was most proud of his service on the USS Vogelgesang as a corpsman where he earned the nickname "Doc".
After his service in the Navy, he began his career as a meat cutter for various markets, the last one being Stop and Shop in South Yarmouth, where he worked for 20 years until his retirement in 2021.
Aside from spending time with his family, John's passions were his motorcycles and bow hunting. He and his wife enjoyed their many motorcycle rides around New England, especially to Laconia and to visit family in Maine. He also enjoyed bow hunting for deer and turkey with his close friend, Dick Adams. His greatest passion was spending time with his children and grandchildren celebrating holidays, birthdays, and special events.
