John B. Edwards Sr.
September 24, 1929 – July 1, 2020
John Bascropolis "JB" Edwards, 90, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2020 at home surrounded by adoring family. JB was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 62 years, Mary (affectionately “ReRe”), his brother Samuel “Red” Edwards, Jr., his sisters Ella Mae King Edwards and Valerie Edwards, and his daughter Karen Yvette Edwards. He is survived by his children Timothy M. Edwards (Allita) of Locust Grove, VA, John B. Edwards Jr. (Roberta) of Chesterfield, VA, Donna M. Edwards of East Falmouth, MA, Claudette C. Edwards of Largo, FL, and George Deveney Edwards (Ryann) of Boston, MA.
JB was born to Samuel A. Edwards, Sr. and Ellen Jones Edwards Cole on September 24, 1929 in East St. Louis, IL. He met and married his late wife of 62 years, Mary Virginia Gregory, of Smyrna/Lavern, TN. They had six children and explored the world from Germany to Canada; Japan and coast to coast across the United States.
JB, John, Jerry, Jack, Mr. Edwards, and Papa were names he was affectionately called but where Bascropolis came from is the seed for a number of stories. At 16, JB joined the United States Army Air Force but was sent home when they learned his age. As soon as he graduated high school, he did serve, ultimately earning the rank of Senior Master Sergeant over his 25 years in the Air Force. He spent his second career in service to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts where, after 24 years, he retired as the Deputy Director for the Department of Unemployment Assistance. While working full-time and raising his family, he also earned his Bachelor of Arts in Humanities/Social Sciences from the University of Massachusetts.
In addition to 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren along with dozens of cousins, nieces & nephews, and friends, JB also leaves sister-in-law Sally Edwards and sisters Sandra Edwards, Rita Edwards Otis, Wanda Edwards McIntosh, and Dawn Edwards Duke.
A private graveside service will be held July 7, 2020 at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA. What I first notice about poppa John Edwards was how much his face would light up while watching his family at the family JB’Q. He was a hilarious man who would belt out a tune at whenever the feeling hit him. I am grateful and blessed to have met him.
To the Edwards Clan
