Margaret May Borden

May 1, 1920September 13, 2020

BORDEN, Margaret May (Borden)Smith , 100, of Bourne, MA passed away surrounded by her loving family on Sunday September 13, 2020 at her home in Bourne. She was born to the late Robert and Margaret Borden (Austin) on May 1, 1920 in Fall River, MA.

Margaret left high school early to support her family, her single parent, mother Margaret Austin Borden, along with her four siblings. She met and married Robert F. Smith in June 29, 1942. Soon Bob left for the Army and years of war with little correspondence to Marg. Margaret was faithful while working at the Torpedo Station in Newport, RI as a bookkeeper. She had attended Thibodeau’s Business School in Fall River. In 1945 reunited with Bob after three years of WWII, Marg and Bob began their family. Nine months later came Carolyn, then Paula, Bob Jr., Bill and Liz. Margaret also did bookkeeping for Marshall Electric Co. Fall River and later People Incorporated, No. Main St. Bob and Marg enjoyed 40 rewarding years together.

Bob passed away after a very long illness with Marg by his side in 1982 while living in Somerset, MA. Marg’s Aunt Gert Borden Howarth invited her to Florida while also inviting Malcolm F. Borden “Mac”, WW11 and Korean War veteran, who was married to Marg’s cousin, Gerry Martin. Gerry passed away so Gert took the role of matchmaker, and there the love story began. Marg and Mac were married on January 27, 1989 at West Congregational Church in Taunton, MA, over the years they travelled across the globe. To this day it has been 31 years of very happy marriage. Their blended family of Marg’s five and Mac’s four, James, Bruce, David, and Beverly enjoyed so many good times. May day, often a party of eighty or more, the ninetieth included a May Pole, that Marg danced around with the great-grandchildren.

Marg was an excellent seamstress, making all her children’s clothes right through high school, even dinner jackets for the boys. Later in life she found that she had art talent, so many of her pieces hang in her family’s homes. She enjoyed classical music, animals especially dogs and horses, and loved dancing and piano playing.

Malcolm F. Borden was owner of Bristol Tape Corp. which his sons and now grandchildren successfully run. He has been the most attentive, loving husband for these thirty-one years that any woman could wish for. They supported each other through the loss of Marg’s grandson Eric, Marg’s daughter Liz and Mac’s son David. The love story has continued to Paula and Jack O’Neil’s home in Bourne, MA. She is survived by her beloved husband of 31 years Malcom F. Borden, her daughters: Carolyn Hebert and husband Paul, Paula O’Neil and husband Jack, Sons; Robert Smith and wife Charline, William Smith and wife Cindy, and she is preceded in passing by her daughter Elizabeth Bessette. Her loving step-children; Bruce Borden and wife Lynn, and Beverly Borden and partner Herb Wasserberg. She also is preceded in passing by her late step-son David Borden surviving wife Rosemary. Also survived by her 18 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild, and another soon.

Funeral Services will be private, due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.
