Mary Katherine McGowan

Mary Catherine McGowan of Pocasset, MA passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2025 at UMASS Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. Born in Leominster, MA she was the daughter of the late Patrick J. and Catherine (McManus) McGowan.

Mary was a graduate of Emmanuel College in Boston, earned her master’s degree at Fitchburg State University and earned her Certificate of Advanced Educational Specialization in Counseling Psychology from Boston College.

She spent 15 years teaching in the Boston and Worcester area as a Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. She had also worked as a public-school guidance counselor for 28 years retiring in 2004 from Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School. She mentored children on Cape Cod and worked on various fundraisers for vocational scholarships. She was a member of the St. John’s Guild and former member of the Cape and Islands Guidance Association. She seasonally was employed by the Canal Chamber of Commerce from 1980-1995 and she also worked part time at the Seacrest Resort and Hotel.

Mary enjoyed Irish music, avid Boston Celtics fan and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her sister-in-law Lois McGowan of Worcester, MA, nieces and nephews, David McGowan and his wife Barbara of Oxford, MA, Patrick McGowan and his wife Susan of Whitinsville, MA, Paul McGowan and his wife Cheryl of Dudley, MA, Karen Noonan and her husband Richard of Worcester, MA, Daniel McGowan and his wife Liane of Leicester, MA and Michael McGowan and his wife Sami of Leicester, MA, also many great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother Thomas P. McGowan and niece Kathleen McGowan.

Mary would like to thank her Cape Cod family for all their assistance over the years and the wonderful staff and friends at Eisenberg Assisted Living.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Shriners Children's New England.

Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2025 at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home 40 MacArthur Blvd. Bourne, MA followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church 841 Shore Road Pocasset, MA.
