Mrs. Pearl “Sam” Sullivan, 87, of Pocasset and formerly of Mashpee, passed away December 3, 2013 at Bourne Manor Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Francis Chausse of Middleboro who predeceased her in 1952. She was married for 10 years to the late golf professional Robert “Bob” Sullivan of Brockton.
Born in New Bedford on June 26, 1926, Pearl was one of eight children born to the late Oliver Chartier and Laura Messier. She was raised in Middleboro and graduated from Middleboro High School in 1944. Following graduation, she served as Private Secretary to Major Arrowsmith and when WWII ended, she became a cost analyst at the Walker Company in Middleboro.
Pearl moved to Falmouth in 1966 where she became known as the “Hostess with the Mostess” at the Coonamessett Inn. Her good friends David and Fuzzy Jarvis asked her to take on the duties of Hostess at the Chart Room in Cataumet. David always said he’d have to hire 3 people to do the work Pearl did in one day. Later, she worked as an interior design and color coordinator for RT Gilman Design of Cotuit. She had a natural talent, great taste, superior judgment and style in spite of no formal training.
Pearl’s greatest joys were spending time with her family, traveling, daily talks on the phone with her kids, days sunning and reading at Old Silver Beach, and cooking, where she earned a reputation for excellence. Her gifts of needlework, artistry, and nautical-inspired furniture adorn the homes of her family. She loved the Patriots, Red Sox, and Sunday afternoon golf, especially when her “boyfriend” Phil Michelson was on the leader board. She adored her Sunday afternoon lunches with Rob and Melanie Florio along with Barb Almeida and the late Nellie Florio. A devout Catholic, Pearl was a parishioner of Christ the King Church in Mashpee and personified the social Gospel of doing good works unto others as she often helped sick friends get to the doctor and made soup for those invalid.
Pearl leaves her 3 children, Melanie Florio and husband Robert of Bourne, Susan Bonito and partner Dave Harris of Florida, and Thomas Sullivan and partner Ellen Cammack of Florida. She was the beloved Nana of Nanci Bonito of Attleboro, Diane Bonito of Wareham, Jennifer Bonito of Wareham, Daniel Sullivan of Chelsea, Kate Pollock and husband Jamie of Peabody, and 4 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her grandson, Jason Bonito of Falmouth. She also leaves a brother, Leonard Chartier of Longbeach, CA and was predeceased by 6 Brothers and Sisters. Pearl also leaves many nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the care and compassion received by both Pearl and the family by the Bourne Manor Nursing Home and Beacon Hospice.
Pearl’s Funeral will be held on Thursday at 10AM from the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd., Bourne followed by her Funeral Mass at 11:30AM in St. John the Evangelist Parish, Pocasset.
