Phyllis June Allen, 95 years old, the eldest daughter of Bernice (Johnson) and Carl Carlson, passed away June 1, 2026. She spent her early childhood years in Norfolk, Massachusetts, back when Norfolk was quite rural. After a disastrous fire on the family property, they relocated to Medfield, Massachusetts, where her father became a well known cabinet maker.
Back then, Medfield was still a small town and Phyllis excelled in school where she graduated in 1949. There she met another student, Ellis N. Allen. They became high school sweethearts and one day he would become her husband. After they married in 1950, they built their own home together in Medfield. There they started to raise two sons, while Ellis built a business as a leading arborist in Massachusetts.
Phyllis was known for her figure skating, and she taught ice skating for years at Rocky Woods Reservation in Medfield. The active family climbed mountains in New Hampshire in the fall. During the summers they would spend weekends and much of the summer at a family property on Jehu Pond in Mashpee, Massachusetts. During the winters, when they weren’t ice skating, the family skied and snowmobiled together.
In later years Phyllis and Ellis had a home built on their property on Jehu Pond. Together, they boated and fished the waters of Vineyard Sound. They travelled with their camping trailer all over the United States, traveling through at least part of all of the lower 48 states. Phyllis and Ellis scuba dived annually for years, hitting all the Caribbean hot spots and Hawaii twice. For years they towed their camper down to the Florida Keys to avoid at least part of the New England winters. While camping in the Keys, Phyllis taught decorative painting while Ellis played tennis. Together they boated in the keys using a small inflatable boat. Phyllis was also active and devote Jehovah Witness.
Phyllis is predeceased by her parents and her sister, Nancy Dawe and her husband Joseph Dawe. She is survived by her husband Ellis, her sons Gerald N. Allen, and James E. Allen, and their wives Valerie Allen, and Nancy Allen, and granddaughter Tamara (Tami) and her husband Chris Leone.
