

He was born Richard Charles Melcher on November 22, 1959 in Port Angeles, WA, the son of Loretta (Hubbard) and Roy Melcher. He was the second of eleven children born to this union. At the age of 3, his parents were told that because of a brain tumor that his chance of surviving it was only 2%. He proved them wrong.
He attended Bourne High School and graduated there in 1979. He then joined the United States Navy serving from 1979 to 1983.
On December 12, 1983, he was united in marriage to Donna Thompson in Horry County, South Carolina.
Richard had a passion for sports and politics, often causing controversy with his love of the Seattle Seahawks, Mariners and Rush Limbaugh.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 33 years Donna, his daughter Diana Hassett and her husband Donald of Bourne, sons; Richard C. Jr. of Medway, Roy D, Kenneth G., William J., and Robert J., all of Wareham. His parents Roy Melcher of Wilmington and Loretta Melcher of Pocasset. Also surviving are his siblings Daniel Melcher of Barnstable, Tammy Lashley of Buzzards Bay, Tanya Franklin and her husband Sean of San Diego, John Melcher and his wife Naneth of Mary Esther, FL, Kenneth Melcher of Bourne, Michael Melcher of Salem, Gerald “Jerry” of Brookline, Ronald Melcher of Pocasset, Donald Melcher and his wife Aaron of Watertown, and Nicholas Melcher of Pocasset. Grandchildren Donovan Hassett, Drake Hassett, Kiera Melcher, Danielle Hassett, Makaylee Melcher, and his brother-in-law David Thompson and his wife Michelle. His mother-in-law Margaret (Bergeron) Thompson of Wareham also survives.
Calling hours with the family will be on Tuesday January 26, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd., Bourne, MA 02532.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 27, at 11:00 AM, at St. John’s the Evangelist Catholic Church, 841 Shore Road, Pocasset. Burial will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
