Born on March 16, 1950, to James and Dorothy (Driscoll) Canty, Rocky was raised in Dedham and spent cherished summers at Hideaway Village, which later became his year-round home. He graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School in 1968, traveled west, and discovered his talent as a plasterer—a trade he mastered over decades, leaving behind a legacy of fine craftsmanship across New England.
Rocky married the love of his life, Judi (Mutchler) Canty, and they shared 28 joyful years before her passing in 2003. Together they survived the loss of their infant daughters, Catherine and Mary. They enjoyed living poolside in Easton but eventually made the beachfront of Hideaway Village their home. They opened their home and hearts to their niece Jessica Mutchler. They enjoyed time on the water, cooking, traveling, and surrounding the children in their lives and friends with love and laughter. Judi and Rocky could make any event or mundane day feel special.
Rocky was known for his intelligence, quick wit, generosity, finding the perfect heartfelt card for any occasion, stuffed quahogs and chowder, love of music, and sparkling blue eyes. A passionate fisherman and boater, he was able to fish up until the very end, thanks to his brother Stephen.
Rocky leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories.
He will be dearly missed by his sister Susan Urciuoli of Falmouth; brother Stephen Canty and wife Joanne (Bodio) of Buzzards Bay; and brother Gerald Johnson and wife Donna of St. Augustine, FL. He was a beloved uncle to Jessica (Mutchler) Croker of Yarmouth, Lauren (Canty) Welch and husband Nathan of Easton, Robin Urciuoli of Middleborough, Karen (Urciuoli) Costa and husband Matt of Falmouth, Sean Canty of Somerville, James Canty of Fall River, Michael Canty of Kansas City, MO, Thomas Canty of Buzzards Bay, and Elizabeth Johnson of St. Augustine, FL.
Rocky will also be lovingly remembered by cousins and dearest of friends Mary Andrews (and her partner Kenny) and Karen (Andrews) Pelletier and husband Pat, all of Buzzards Bay; and great-nieces and nephews Alex and Logan Nason, Pepper and Jake Costa, and Alexa and Adelyn Croker.
He was predeceased by his wife Judi, daughters Catherine and Mary, parents James and Dorothy Canty, brothers Thomas and James Canty, and nephew Joseph Urciuoli.
A celebration of Rocky’s life will be planned. To honor him, share a smile, tell a good story, cook a favorite dish, get out on the water, love with all your heart, and cherish and share fond memories just as Rocky did!
