SAGAMORE BEACH-Robert Clarke Newell Jr., 72 beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle passed away peacefully July 19, 2019 surrounded by his loving family.
Rob was born to the late Robert Clarke and Barbara Johnson Newell and spent his childhood years in Uxbridge, Massachusetts before moving to Sagamore Beach permanently in 1962, where he had summered most of his youth. He graduated from Bourne High School and earned business degrees from Johnson & Wales and New Hampshire College. He served his country in the Army as an atomic demolitionist stationed in Alaska. In 1970, he began Sagamore Tree & Landscape Service, Inc., which he owned and operated up until the present and was affectionally known to many customers and friends as “Hurricane Bob.” He loved the outdoors, spending time with his family and all animals, especially his dog L.B.
He was a member of DeWitt Clinton Lodge, Cawnacome Sunshine Lodge, Valley of Southeastern Massachusetts Scottish Rite, Aleppo Shriners, Sandwich Chapter No. 221 Order of Eastern Star, The American Legion, Sandwich-Bourne Lions Club, and BNI. Also, he was a past president of the Monument Beach Sportsmen’s Club and a board member and officer of the Sagamore Cemetery Association.
He will be greatly missed by his devoted family, wife Susan Elaine Newell, son Robert James Newell, daughter Sarah Elaine and her husband Joseph Silva. He was proud of his grandchildren, Jacob Clarke and Emma Elaine Silva. He is also survived by sister Sue Newell Reilly, brother James Preston Newell and his wife Susan, father and mother in law Wayne and Janice Terrill, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation hours will be held on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Nickerson Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd, Bourne MA. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Swift Memorial United Methodist Church in Sagamore Beach followed by a committal service at the National Cemetery in Bourne.
