Winifred Elizabeth McDonough

Winifred Elizabeth McDonough, 98, of Bourne, Massachusetts, formerly of South Boston, passed away on August 22, 2026. Born in Boston on November 30, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Dorothy (Hegerich) Donovan and the beloved wife of the late William McDonough.

Winifred was a woman of remarkable warmth, wit, strength, and spirit. For many years, she worked as a nurse’s aide—a natural role for someone whose caring heart and capable hands were always ready to help. Looking after others was one of the ways she showed her love, but Winifred understood that life was meant to be embraced fully, too.

She was funny, lively, curious, and wonderfully adventurous. Winifred had a way of finding joy wherever she went and of making the people around her feel lighter. She loved to travel and never allowed age to limit her sense of possibility. She visited other countries, set off on road trips, and welcomed each new experience with an open mind and a twinkle in her eye. To Winifred, there was always another place to see, another story to hear, another memory waiting to be made and quite often, another reason to laugh.

Her greatest joy, however, was her family. Winifred was the devoted mother of eleven children: Maureen “Moe” Harrison and her husband, Tom; Patricia McDonough and her wife, Sabina; William “Billy” McDonough and his wife, Heroko; the late Denise McDonough and her husband, John; twins Winnie McDonough and her husband, Joe, and Jimmy McDonough, whose late wife, Ginny, brought even more family into Winifred’s life; Donna McDonough and her late husband, Glen; Kevin McDonough and his wife, Donna; the late Michael McDonough and his wife, Monica; Dorothy McDonough; and Margaret McDonough and her husband, Brian. She also leaves her beloved daughter-in-laws, Roberta & Sharon, who remained treasured members of the family.

The birth of Winnie and Jimmy held a special meaning for Winifred, who had herself been born a twin. Her twin brother, Charles, died in infancy, making the bond she shared with her own twins especially precious.

Winifred was the proud grandmother of Jimmy, Stephen, Nicole, Renee, Nick, Greg, Kerry, Sean, Dorothy, Brendan, Kathleen, Rose, Michael, Patrick, Kai, Jesse, Katie, Michaela, Marie, Courtney, Taylor, Breanna, Brian, Michael Jr., Maddie, Megan, Matthew, Mark, and Melanie. She is also survived by 20 beloved great-grandchildren.

With every birth, marriage, and blended family connection, Winifred’s family grew wider and more wonderful. They were the center of her world, and she was the heart of theirs. She loved them fiercely and unconditionally. She surprised them, encouraged them, teased them, made them laugh, and filled their lives with stories and memories.

Visitation will be held 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 30th, 2026, at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home 40 MacArthur Blvd., Bourne, MA. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. at St. Margaret of Scotland Church 141 Main Street Buzzards Bay, MA. Interment to follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery.
