Turhan Beygo was born in Bolu, Turkey to Sakip Beygo, a provincial governor of the Turkish Republic, and Merzuka Beygo (Aytas). He attended school at Galatasaray Lisesi from 5 years old until graduating high school. After graduation he fulfilled his mandatory military service in the Turkish army, and upon discharge he attended Istanbul Technical University, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in architecture.
In 1960 he immigrated to the United States to attend the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he received a second Master’s Degree in City Planning. He also worked as a teaching assistant while attending graduate school.
After graduation, he worked as a City Planner in Baltimore, Maryland, Pensacola, Florida and Dale City, Virginia before settling in Crofton, Maryland, where he worked for the Prince George’s government parks and planning division and eventually The University of Maryland, where he was a key member in the design of the Eastern Shore campus.
Turhan was very social and known for his sense of humor. He loved reading and was fluent in Turkish, French, and English. He enjoyed listening to classical music, and was musically gifted, playing harmonica by ear. He also loved gardening and was interested in protecting the environment and sustainability.
He is survived by his wife, Nurten Beygo (Heris), and his children Aysegul Apaydin, Cem Beygo (Arzu), Hakan Beygo (Heather), and Pinar Beygo. He is also survived by his 3 grandchildren, Emile Lacheny, and Kenan and Aydin Beygo (Hakan).
A celebration of life will occur at a later date.
