When I think of Lolo Fred, there are 2 words that come to mind:  SUGAR and LOVE.  

Many of you may know that Lolo had a really big sweet tooth.  He added sugar to almost anything he ate -- sprinkled on top of pizza, mixed in with his salad dressing, and even adding more sugar to his already sweetened powdered drinks, soda, or fruit cocktail syrup.  He even had his own special sweet ketchup sauce that he frequently cooked -- which was pretty much a little bit of ketchup, a little bit of water, and a whole lot of sugar!   
I even remember one time, he added some leftover chocolate-covered pretzels to his spaghetti, because he wanted something crunchy and sweet!  He really enjoyed lunch that day!  While at the time I thought it was funny (and wondered how it must've tasted), I'm now convinced that it was all that sugar that made Lolo one of the sweetest people I know.  He had a caring heart, and that was so evident in the way he loved his family.  He was the kind of man that was always there; a true “Family Man” in every sense of the word.  Traveling back and forth from the US to the Philippines, he split his time with Lola Auntie in Pasay, and with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren here in the US.  He never forgot birthdays or anniversaries.  And even if he was in the Philippines when it was your birthday, he still handed you an envelope the next time he'd see you.   

The second word that reminds me of Lolo is LOVE.

I remember during Lolo and Lola's 55th anniversary back in 2000, Lolo said the “secret” to having a long and loving marriage is really no secret at all.  It's as simple as loving each other.  And you could tell he loved Lola Grace with all his heart.  Those little things he did for her every day showed just how much he loved her.  Every morning, he took out her coffee mug from the kitchen cabinet.  He'd then take out the can of Swiss Miss (as well as the container of sugar, of course), and put it on the kitchen counter, so that it would be ready for her when she'd come down for breakfast.  He also made sure that Lola never missed a dose of her daily vitamin after they ate.
During the day, he and Lola would read together, pray together, nap together, and watch Judge Judy together.  As you can imagine, they were pretty inseparable.  
At night before bedtime, he made sure the nightlight was on in their room, and also in the bathroom so that she could find her way during the night.

You may have seen in many of the pictures shown in the slideshow, that Lolo Fred and Lola Grace would sometimes steal a kiss from each other right before a picture was taken.  It was that kind of sweet love that never went away.
  
I was lucky enough to be with Lolo last November in the Philippines when he was sick.  And even when he was having a difficult time talking, there was no doubt that the love was still there.  One day, he pointed at Lola Grace, smiled, and with his finger in the air, wrote the letters “L – O – V – E”, and then pointed to her again.     

The love they shared, and the love he gave to his family is unmatched.  It extends beyond timezones... beyond words... and beyond life and death.  

Love may be as strong as death.  It is as inevitable, as powerful, as eternal.  It cannot be escaped... it cannot be avoided... and it will not be forgotten.

But when death is gone... LOVE will always remain.

I love you Lolo.  Thank you for being a true example of what ‘SWEET LOVE' means.

Our dear Uncle Fred, may the light of this candle light your path through your journey in meeting our Creator face to face.
