In the late fall of 1980, I won a radio contest. The prize was a one-way ticket to New York City. My soon to be fiancé Julianne was spending a year living with her grandparents after graduating from college. I parlayed my ticket into a round trip to Baltimore for Christmas. That was when I first met Lee and Vi. That's actually the very first thing I learned about them. They were very firm about what to call them. Lee's wry humor was a bit of a challenge at first, but when we got to talking world events, I knew we would enjoy long and involved conversations. I will forever be grateful for the many happy years Julianne was able to share with her grandparents. It also means a lot that we were able to make a trip to visit Lee two years ago, and got to pass on best wishes over the phone this past Christmas. Julianne and I will hold fiercely to these and many other golden memories. They are life's truest treasures.
