Elissa Landi Simmons

October 31, 1944September 2, 2018

Elissa Landi Simmons was born two months early on Oct. 31, 1944 in Uniontown, Pa. After graduating high school and two years of community college, she migrated to the Washington, DC area. There she went to work at National Geographic Society. There her Christian boss arranged for a blind date to Conway Simmons, who became her husband on April 6, 1968. They lived in Oxon Hill, Md. for some time and later moved to Edgewater, Md.

Conway was instrumental, along with his mother Beulah Simmons, in Elissa’s salvation, love of the Lord and the church, and loving people. Elissa and Conway kept Beulah, along with Elissa’s mother, Margaret Landi, until their homegoing. She is predeceased by her husband Conway, her father James Landi, and only sibling James W. Landi. Conway and Elissa were both very active at Trinity Assembly of God in Lanham, Md., the Simmons family church since its inception, for more than 30 years. There Elissa, a two-time breast cancer survivor, was heavily involved in the music ministry and cancer support group.

After Conway died in 1999, Elissa moved to Crofton, Md., and started an administrative position at Woodward Estate Assisted Living in Bowie, Md. She joined Grace Baptist Church in 2004, sang in the choir, facilitated a GriefShare program and was active in the singles ministry.

In semi-retirement, she worked part-time for the Naval Academy and did photography and travel writing for the Bowie Blade-Newsand her dear friend, Linda Blachly’s magazine, Trips & Getaways, from 2004-2010.

Elissa is survived by her daughter, Mary Margaret Bucolo (Tony), grandsons Jonathan and Victor; step-grandchildren, Brittany, Marina (Fran) and Hayley. Also, stepdaughter Vicki Hinz (Michael); step-grandchildren, Sean and Meghan (Kevin); two great-grandchildren, Kaleb and Kolton; and many nieces and nephews.

It's hard to remember Elissa when she wasn't smiling...and a beautiful one at that. Such a sweet, kind, and loving person. I remember her conducting an exercise class I attended at Trinity A/G. Also remember her visiting my mother and father, Dorothy and Francis Furgang, as they got older, and for making a beautifully decorated Easter Egg with a music box inside. I now have that egg and would always, and will continue, think of Elissa when I get it out every Easter.

Loved to hear her beautiful singing voice....what a gift. All to the Glory of God.

May God comfort all the family and friends who will miss her so much.

Love and Prayers,
Linda Furgang Kelly

I just want to Ms. Simmons was a very special person. When I was young she was my teacher, church Drama, and children's choir teacher. My mom Adrienne Rivera and Ms. Simmons we're very close and best friends they use to always go on trips and have nice lunches together. She always was a loving and caring person, and I'm glad she got to see my boys as well. I just remember the times of happiness when I was young. I know now she and my mom are back together and singing in heaven.

Hi Elissa's family and friends, my prayers of sympathy to you on her passing. I sure do remember her helpfulness and encouragement during the early days of Grace Baptist singles, which went in with Single Christians Social Connection later on. She and Cheryl and Jeann and Linda and Alan and Bill and Metaxcia and others always provided good conversation and enjoyable evenings at the potlucks and video Bible studies and the special events also. May God bless and comfort all of you in this sad time.

Lisa shared God and Jesus through her beautiful music as a soloist , a choir member and with Clay. " I've Just Seen Jesus" was my favorite song she sang with Clay! She was a friend to everyone! I will always remember her beautiful smile!

Lisa was a very dear kind and lovely....a real Christian lady. We enjoyed working with her musically at Trinity AofG Church, Lanham, MD. Conway and Mary were the wonderful completion of her family, and we loved knowing them, also.

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised! Now, Lisa is absent from the body, BUT, present with the Lord.

Amen, to that and Maranatha.
