Of Silver Spring, MD. Well-known and beloved for his devotion to patients and family, surgeon and retired US Air Force Colonel Francis X. Carillo died of natural causes on June 6, 2011 surrounded by family and loved ones at Walter Reed
Army Medical Center. Admired for his charisma and his devotion to community betterment, as well as his mean golf swing and downhill skiing swoosh, “Doc” Carillo will be sorely missed by scores of family and friends.
Dr. Francis Xavier Carillo was born July 19, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Xavier High School (NY, NY) in 1945. He then attended Fordham University for a BS in Pre-Medicine (graduated 1948), followed by Georgetown University for his MD in Medicine (graduated 1952). He remained in the Washington D.C. area from 1952 to 2011.
His career spanned from 1959 to 1998. He was the Former Chairman Department of Surgery, Doctor's Community Hospital, Lanham MD; the Senior Attending Surgeon Meritorious, Prince George's Hospital Center, Cheverly MD; Retired Chairman of Department of Surgery, Bowie Health Center, Bowie,MD; General Surgeon, Providence Hospital, Washington, DC; Private Practice in Prince George's County, MD.
He also was actively involved in the military: Retired Colonel US Air Force, 30 years of service; Air Force
Reserve, Commander, 459th TAC Hospital, Andrew's Air Force Base, Maryland 1961-1980; Flight Surgeon, 1st Lieutenant, then Captain, Air Force Medical Corps during Korean War, Kirtland AFB, New Mexico 1953-1955; Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant Field Artillery, US Army Reserve from Fordham University ROTC 1948, transferred to Air Force 1950.
In addition to his medical and military careers, Francis Carillo was also heavily involved in the community:In the 1970s he was a key member of the Prince George's County Hospital Commission, responsible for founding two new health care facilities that resulted in the County hospital becoming a foremost trauma facility in the region. Dr. Carillo was also a member of Prince George's County Medical Society and the Washington, DC Surgical Academy.
He is survived by three daughters, Rachel Carillo (Baltimore, MD), Rebecca Murphy (Colorado Springs, CO), and Anne Carillo (Houston, TX); two sons, Col. Frank Carillo (Edgewood, NM), Donald Carillo (Fountain Hills, AZ); and nine grandchildren.
Family and friends will be gathering 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2011 at the Robert E. Evans Funeral Home (Bowie, MD) for a Visitation. A Funeral Service will be held 12 noon Saturday, June 11, 2011 in the chapel at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (Bowie, MD); Interment will follow at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery. A Celebration of his life will be held at Crofton Country Club Saturday, June 11 from 4-8 PM.
