Gerda Martha Gonzales, affectionately known to most of us as Ms. G, was born on Wednesday, March 8, 1939, in Kingston, Jamaica to her loving parents Vincent Gonzales and Victoria Harris. She was the third of five children.
As an adult, living in Jamaica, Ms. G passionately mastered her skills as a seamstress; attaining such an excellent standard in her craft that she could free-handedly design, cut and sew clothing ranging in complexity from everyday ladies’ styles to beautifully embellished gowns for beauty queens.
On February 4, 1995, Ms. G migrated to the United States to join her children. Although the ultimate plan was for her to retire, Ms. G had a desire to do more, and soon found her second calling, taking care of children. With the support of her family, Ms. G opened an in-home daycare business known as “Ms. G’s Daycare Center”. This passionate love for children–her own– and everyone else’s, persisted until her very last breath. Over the years, Ms. G formed many long-lasting relationships with parents and children to whom she lovingly sowed and to whose lives she richly invested.
Ms. G’s faith in God was unwavering, and as she aged, her faith only grew more formidable. She loved going “on the street” to shop for suits and fancy hats to attend church. She enjoyed retelling stories that she had heard on the latest newscast, cooking her favorite dishes, and preferred to walk wherever she needed to go. Her favorite pastime though was being in the company of her children (those she birthed and those she raised), her grandchildren and her great grands.
Ms. G lived and loved purely and simply, and her lifestyle was governed by the biblical precepts that she espoused. She left us unexpectedly on Saturday, December 10, 2022, at the age of 83. Our hearts are so broken by this unexpected loss, but it brings us comfort to know that she is now resting safely in the arms of the Lord she ferently served. Her memory will be indelibly etched in our minds as a caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She is and will continue to be desperately missed by all whose lives she touched.
Ms. G was preceded in death by her parents: Vincent Gonzales and Victoria Harris; and two of her siblings: Louie Gonzales and Mervin Gonzales. She is survived by her children: Doreen Curtis, Charles “Chris” Francis (Jalda Mason), Norman Francis (Nicole Francis), Lancelot “Gerry” Palmer, Ralston “Tim” Francis. Her grandchildren: Kimberlee Mason-Gyles (Peter Gyles), Jannique Greenland, Keleicia “KC” Mason-Francis, Kendell Mason-Francis, Norman “NA” Francis Jr., Isaiah Francis, Ashleigh Palmer, Lancelot “LJ” Palmer Jr., Alexa Palmer, and Ansleigh Francis. Her great grandchildren: Cameron Gyles, Ethan Gyles, Katalina Mason, Kayden Richards and Khelani Davis. Her siblings Llyod and Sylvia Gonzales; and a host of other dear family and friends.
