Gustavo Mercanti

Gustavo and Anna were married for 62 years. He was the son of Gustavo and Diletta (Scachetti) Mercanti. Predeceased by his parents and three brothers - Ed, Jim and William, as well as two sisters, Blanche and Nellie.

Survived by his wife; son Mark Mercanti; grandsons Richard and Anthony Mercanti; daughter Melissa Mercanti-Flynn; Son-in-law Tom, and grandson Grant Flynn.

After service in the United States Air Force as a weatherman, Gustavo returned to New York and earned a Bachelor in Business Administration degree from The College of The City of New York on June 17, 1959. He was a member of the Keylos Fraternity.

Following college, he worked at General Dynamics in Groton Connecticut, where he enjoyed sailing with his brother Jim on the yacht "Vayu." An avid sailor throughout his life, he sailed the Chesapeake Bay on his 30 foot Islander Bahama sailboat, "The Marlissa," in honor of his children, Mark and Melissa.

In 1961, Gustavo moved to Washington D.C., to work as a trainee for the United States Treasury Department, where he met his wife. Married in 1963, lived in Virginia for a few years, and then settled in Bowie, where he spent the remainder of his life. After retiring from the United States Treasury, he worked for the Maryland State Treasury for five years in Annapolis, Maryland; owned a marina in Solomons Island, Maryland; then retired and enjoyed 33 years of relaxation!

Gustavo was active in the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a good friend, neighbor, and gentle soul; he will be missed.

A visitation for Gustavo will be held Monday, August 4, 2025 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Robert E. Evans Funeral Home, 16000 Annapolis Road, Bowie, MD 20715.

His funeral service will follow Monday, August 4, 2025 at 12:00 PM, 16000 Annapolis Road, Bowie, MD 20715.

A graveside service for Gustavo will occur Monday, August 4, 2025 at 1:45 PM at Maryland Veterans Cemetery Crownsville, 1122 Sunrise Beach Rd, Crownsville, MD 21032.
