She was born on December 7, 1941, in Queens, New York, to James Francis Rost and Dorothy (Weiss) Rost as the fourth of five children—David, Mary, Paul, and Jimmy. Joan graduated from the College of New Rochelle in 1963 and attended a year of graduate school before marrying Frank Figlozzi in 1964 at Our Lady of Lourdes in Malverne, New York. The couple moved to Northern Virginia and then to Bowie in 1971, where they raised their children, Jim and Christina and resided for 54 years.
Joan became a high school math teacher, a role that perfectly suited her sharp mind and love for math. Many evenings were spent grading papers and crafting lesson plans. She was known as a tough but fair teacher who was committed to helping every student learn.
Joan loved to travel. After her retirement, Joan and Frank traveled to all 50 states, taking many road trips across the country, meeting friends and family along the way and exploring each new destination. She also enjoyed frequent visits to Bethany Beach, a trip to Rome where she had an audience with Pope Francis, and a memorable journey to the Galápagos Islands.
One of Joan’s greatest joys came from spending treasured time with children. She cared for the Parlett children and her grandchildren Kira and Anjay, filling their days with warmth, laughter, and love.
She enjoyed long, meaningful conversations with family and friends, sharing stories, wisdom, and laughter. Known for her spirited wit and quick intellect, Joan was smart, compassionate, curious, and feisty—qualities that left every interaction with her both memorable and joyful.
Joan is survived by Frank, her husband of 61 years; her son Jim Figlozzi (Cynthia Knezich), daughter Christina Figlozzi (Manav Singla), grandchildren Kira Singla and Anjay Singla; siblings David Rost, Mary Suddaby, and Paul Rost (Vickie); brother-in-law Thomas Figlozzi, sister-in-law Margaret Waterson, four nieces, and five nephews.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 21, 2024, from 4 PM to 7 PM at Robert E. Evans Funeral home at 16000 Annapolis Road, Bowie, Maryland, 20715. Joan’s funeral service will take place on Wednesday, October 22, 2025 at 11 AM at Sacred Heart Chapel, 16301 Annapolis Road, accessible via the entrance next to Sacred Heart Church.
