It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, husband, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, John Mayes. Born on April 2, 1951, to John and Irene Mayes, he was affectionately known as "Fuzzy."
John was a dedicated and skilled diesel mechanic for the PG County School Board, where he was highly regarded. Outside of work, he had a passion for fishing and camping with family and friends. He also enjoyed restoring his hot rod and was always eager to offer rides.
In 1980, John married Geneva and welcomed her three children, Ray, Dawn, and Mark, into his life. The following year they had their fourth child, John. He loved his family deeply, and his children often speak of how he positively impacted their lives, for which they are eternally grateful. Many will say they adopted him, not the other way around. He also had a special affection for the family pets, often spoiling them with treats. He is remembered by his special notes he left behind when leaving the house, which will be cherished forever.
John was preceded in death by his father, John; his mother, Irene; his brother, Jimbo; and his sons, Ray and Mark. He is survived by his wife, Geneva; his son, John; his daughter, Dawn; his sisters, Susie and Mary; and his 9 grandchildren, Ray and wife Ariel, Anthony and wife Violet, Riley, Owen, Hattie, Ashley, Juliannah, Brooklyn, and Philip; Great Grandchildren, Oliva and Beau. He will be deeply missed by many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Visitation services will be held at Robert E. Evans Funeral Home, located at 16000 Annapolis Road, Bowie, MD 20715, on October 9, 2025, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and again from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
His funeral service will follow, beginning at 7:00 pm.
