Leo J. Fisher

Leo J Fisher was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, friend and Korean War hero. He passed away after a long courageous battle with dementia on October 29, 2023 at age 92. Born to Leo C. Fisher and Mary (Nolan) Fisher in Shamokin, Pennsylvania on February 28, 1931.

Leo began his career as a coal miner. He joined the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was deployed to Korea, where he flew reconnaissance missions into enemy territory in North Korea. After discharge from the Air Force, he graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Meteorology in 1957. He then worked as a meteorologist for TWA in New York.

He moved to Bowie Maryland in 1961 where he resided for over 60 years. He worked as an oceanographer for the Naval Research Laboratories and NOAA Fisheries for the remainder of his career.

Leo was one of the six children. He married the former Janet A. Fatz of Shamokin, Pennsylvania on September 1, 1956. They were married for 41 years until her death in 1998. His hobbies included metal detecting, ship and airplane modeling, photography, reading, numismatics (coin collecting) and enjoying time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Leo is preceded in death by his parents, wife Janet, sisters, Mary Louise Fisher and Joanne (John) Fisher, and brothers, John W. Fisher and James (Onalee) Fisher. He is survived by daughter, Christine (Joseph) Myers of Bowie, MD, and son, Patrick (Deborah) of Las Cruces NM, granddaughters Hope (Brian Ghiloni) and Grace, grandsons, Michael (Kara), and Curtis (Gabie) and great granddaughters, Julia, Ellie and Sutton.

A visitation will be held Saturday, November 4, 2023, from 4 to 6 PM at the Evans funeral home 16000 Annapolis Rd. in Bowie Maryland. He will be interred at the Cheltenham Veterans cemetery in December (date TBD).
