Mary Ann was born on December 22, 1933, in Stow, Ohio, to Loel W. and Ruth Bailey. She grew up in Stow and nearby Tallmadge alongside her younger brother, James. Active in her youth, she participated in the Girl Scouts of America, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and Tallmadge United Methodist Church. She graduated from Tallmadge High School with the Class of 1951 and went on to work at the Bank of Akron.
In 1955, she met her future husband, Joseph Anzallo, who was serving in the Military Police Battalion of the Marine Corps stationed at the Naval Air Station in Akron, Ohio. They were married on November 4, 1956. In 1958, they moved to Hyattsville, Maryland, before settling in Bowie, Maryland, in 1977, where they raised their three children: Anita, Ruth Ann, and Michael. Prior to retiring, Mary Ann worked at the Brady Company in Bowie and proctored D.C. bar exams at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
Mary Ann devoted her life to her family and her faith communities, including Tallmadge United Methodist Church in Ohio, Ager Road United Methodist Church in Hyattsville, and St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church in Bowie. Over the years, she taught Sunday school and was an active member of women’s church circles. She never let four hip replacements or two knee replacements dampen her spirits, always greeting others with a smile and an encouraging word.
Affectionately known as “Grammy” to her seven grandchildren and “GG” to her six great-grandchildren, her eyes lit up whenever her “grands” or “great-grands” were around. Mary Ann and Joe attended many of their grandchildren’s activities, and she was always among the first to offer words of encouragement and a big smile. Patriotic at heart, she dearly loved her country and enjoyed wearing red, white, and blue. She was also an avid fan of professional sports, enthusiastically following the Washington Commanders, Cleveland Guardians, Baltimore Orioles, and Washington Nationals.
Mary Ann is survived by her husband of 69 years, Joseph; her daughter Anita; her daughter Ruth Ann (David); her son Michael (Dawn); her grandchildren Jonathan (Skye), Gabrielle (Jacinto), Nicholas (Heather), Michaela (Cody), Summer (Kate), Alyssa (Sam), and Piper; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Loel and Ruth Bailey, and her brother, James Bailey.
