
Mary Ellen (Fox) Kelly, a long time resident of Bowie, Maryland, passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at the age of 86. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in Charlestown, a neighborhood of Boston. When the family moved to Melrose, a suburb of Boston, she met and married the late George V. Kelly, her devoted husband of 51 years. In 1952, while serving in the US Army, George was transferred to Arlington, Virginia which brought the couple to the D.C. metro area. Mary worked downtown in DC at an insurance office on K Street until starting a family with the birth of twin sons in 1955.Since then, she has been a stay-at-home mom and full-time homemaker. In 1961, the Kelly’s became one of the first 100 families to purchase a home in the brand new Levitt development called Belair, making Bowie their forever hometown. George and Mary enjoyed movies, shopping, music, and spending time with family at their Kent Island townhouse on the Chester River. After the passing of her husband 12 years ago, Mary lived in her Bowie home for another ten years.
Mary spent the last couple of years of her life at HeartFields Assisted Living of Bowie, a place filled with a great team of people who genuinely cared about her and cared for her. She learned to paint, she played bingo, she enjoyed listening and dancing to her music, and she loved the great food!
Mary is survived by her three children,Ronald Kelly of Greenbelt, Richard Kelly of Columbia,Theresa Kelly of Bowie, and her granddaughter, Stephanie Kelly. She is also survived by two sisters, Rose Stryke and Rita Keohane, both of Massachusetts. Her other siblings,Peggy Rossi,Betty Sullivan,Maureen Crocker, and Edward Fox, all predeceased her.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Mary’s life on Sunday evening, June 12, 2016, at the Old Bowie Town Grille (www.oldbowietowngrille.com) located in Bowie, Maryland. It is an old fashioned Irish pub so dress is casual.Food, drink, and music from Mary’s boom box will start at 5:00 p.m., and remembrances will be shared at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mary’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice.
