Mary Turk O’Rourke, age 81, passed away on October 26, 2025, after a long battle with cancer. Born in Washington, D.C., September 9, 1944, Mary led a life full of curiosity, compassion, and devotion to family.
A dedicated scholar and lifelong learner, Mary earned her Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology from Harvard University, a reflection of her deep fascination with the human story and the natural world. She raised her children in Scituate and Cambridge, Massachusetts, before ultimately settling in Federalsburg, Maryland, to be near her beloved son and grandchildren.
Mary was an ardent animal lover, a loyal Washington Commanders fan and late-blooming but passionate follower of the Boston Red Sox, and a thoughtful friend to many. She loved word games and logic puzzles and gave a love of cooking to her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her son, John Brian O’Rourke, her daughter-in-law Sally O'Rourke, her daughter, Cristin Tracy O’Rourke (Buckley), and her son-in-law Keith Buckley; as well as three cherished grandchildren—Tiernan, an entertainment engineer; Dierdre, an EMT who plans to pursue a medical career; and Fiona, a dedicated high school sailor—each a source of immense pride and joy.
Mary’s life will be remembered for her intelligence, humor, and the steadfast love she gave to her family and friends. Her spirit will live on in the laughter of her children, the curiosity of her grandchildren, and the gentle kindness she shared with all.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the TidalHealth Nanticoke Allen Cancer Center in Seaford, Delaware. The team there helped her beat the wildest expectations when she was diagnosed by two years.
