Mary was born October 29, 1935 at the former Mercy Douglas Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. She was the first child born to the late Dr. and Mrs. Edward B. Georges. Her parents had recently moved to Norristown, PA. The young family was warmly embraced by the community. Mary had many childhood friends who would remain her lifelong friends.
On December 31, 1939 at the age of four, Mary and her baby sister were Christened by the Rev. W.W. Jacobs of MT Zion A. M. E. Church of Norristown. The service was held at the home of her aunt and uncle, Dr. Thomas W. Georges in Philadelphia PA. The witnesses included her Godparents Mr. and Mrs. Herman Miller and other relatives and friends.
Mary attended MT. Zion Sunday School and Church. She served on the Junior Usher Board and sang on the Youth Choir until she went to college.
She was always a good student. Her formal education began at W S Hancock Elementary and continued at Rittenhouse Jr High and Norristown Sr. High. In addition to her academic schedule, Mary was a member of the Glee Club, student council and the Acappela choir. While still in elementary school, Mary began to take piano and vocal lessons. Her first vocal recital piece was "Alice Blue Gown".
In 1952 at the age of 16, Mary graduated from high school and followed in her fathers’ footsteps to attend Howard University in Washington, D.C. After her freshman year, she married her college sweetheart Joseph Farrar, Sr. Joseph was a recent Howard R.O.T.C. graduate and was going into the military as a First Lieutenant officer. Mary continued her studies at Howard and received her B.A. degree in 1956. During her stay at Howard U., Mary served on many committees and held various leadership positions. In the fall of 1953 Mary was one of the “BAD 18” and was initiated into the Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She was currently an active member of the Federal City Alumnae Chapter.
Shortly after graduation, her daughter Debra was born. Joseph Jr was born two years later. The family moved to NY. where Mary received her Masters' degree in Library Science at Pratt Institute and Joseph completed his law degree at Fordham University.
Years after their divorce, Mary met and later married Eugene (Bootsie) Seale in 1974. They moved to Roosevelt, L.I.,N.Y. After moving to Roosevelt, Mary joined The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. This was an important milestone in Mary's spiritual life. She became an active member and enjoyed teaching Sunday School and working with the youth at the church. Notably, Mary served as the Vice President of the Churchwide Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) from 1996-1999. Eugene passed away in 1987.
After her retirement from the New York City Public School System, Mary relocated to Upper Marlboro, MD. She enjoyed decorating her new home, made new friends, organized a book club and found a new church home at All Saints Lutheran. Mary jumped right into the community and served on the Homeowners Association Board of Directors as Secretary.
Mary loved to travel, shop and enjoyed the theatre. She took tours all over the world, and visited all but 4 of the states in the U.S. Whenever she traveled, Mary purchased a special cross to add to her collection of crosses.
A few years ago, she began to do needlepoint again. She created many beautiful pieces. She took great pleasure in sharing them with family and friends.
Mary loved her flowers. She was so excited when each year her orchids would show their blooms.
Blue was Mary's favorite color. She enjoyed wearing blue clothing and accessories…..always stylishly coordinated. All of her favorite dishes, and home decor were blue and white. During a trip to Italy, she was delighted to find (and order) a blue crystal glass chandelier which was perfect for the dining room of her new home.
To God be the Glory for an Exceptional Life Well Lived.
