Nurten was born in Istanbul, Turkey to Talat and Necmiye Heris on February 14, 1931. She was the oldest of 6 children and is survived by her 2 younger sisters, Sevim Tok and Sevinc Koksoy. She was preceded in death by her 3 brothers, Atilla Heris, Erdogan Heris and Bora Heris.
She spent most of her childhood and youth travelling to various places in Turkey with her family due to the military service of her father, who was a colonel in the Turkish army and one of the private guards for Turkey’s founder and president, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Her family returned to her beloved Istanbul in her late teen years. In 1960, she married Ahmet Turhan Beygo who she met while working at the Istanbul Technical University and they immigrated to the United States, where she spent the rest of her life.
Nurten was a devoted mother and grandmother and the matriarch of her extended family in Istanbul. She was a great friend and advisor to many and loved by all. She was highly intelligent, wise, and always wondered if her son Hakan was wearing a t-shirt underneath his shirt. She loved to listen to music and was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed needlework, knitting and was socially active and volunteered her time to many organizations in her youth. She truly enjoyed weekly tea and lunch with her friends.
She is survived by her children, Cem Beygo, Hakan Beygo (Heather), and Pinar Beygo and her two grandchildren, Kenan and Aydin Beygo (Hakan and Heather) and lots of yarn and fabric.
