

In celebration of life, he suddenly received the call from his Heavenly Father. Richard gave his life to Christ as a young mand and he loved the Lord with his whole heart.
Richard's deepest passion was serving the Lord. He was a member of Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church in Fort Washington, Maryland, and served as a member of the King's Men Choir for a brief time.
A graduate of Jesup W. Scott High School in Toledo, Ohio he was a member of the "Class of 66". Richard also attended Ashworth College out of Norcross, Georgia to study criminal justice in pursuit of his Associate's Degree.
Richard worked for Sun Oil in Toledo, Ohio as a draftsman and in 1973 he made the decision to serve his country and enlisted in the U.S. Navy for two tours of duty. He retired in 1983 with honors. In 1989 Richard relocated from the midwest to the east coast (Bowie, Maryland) which he called home. He worked in physical security with various employers such as Marriott and EDS until he settled with Wackenhut retiring in December of 2008.
He was preceded in death by his parents Geneva Fields and James Thornton.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, best friend and soul mate of 27 years who he affectionately called "The Boss", Brenda Cargile-Thornton, son Richard L. Peyton, stepfather Gilbert Ramsey, three brothers: James O. Thornton (Gail), Jeffrey M. Newbill (Diane), Terry M. Ramsey (Beverly), three sisters: Betty J. Micheal (Rufus), Patricia A. Matthews (Michael), Cynthia L. Johns (Terry). Special friends: The Crockett Family, Lawrence Kynard (Pearl) of Toledo, Ohio, Pastor Stella M. Johnson of Toledo, Ohio, a granddaughter, a host of neices, nephews, friends and of course his spriritual family of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church, Fort Washington, Maryland.
This world will never be the same without him and he will truly be missed by all who knew him.
Visitaton will be held 2-4 and 7-9 Wednesday February 17, 2010 at Robert E. Evans Funeral Home. And 10:00 - 11:00 AM Thursday February 18, 2010 at Ebenezer A.M.E. Church, Fort Washington, MD. Where funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday February 18, 2010. Interment to follow at Maryland Veteran's Cemetery, Crownsville, MD.
