Born in Indiana on April 8th, 1941, Robert attended school in Midland, PA, and completed high school in Milwaukee, WI. He managed a clothing business in Manhattan before a long career in commercial sales focused on equipment and airplane parts. After sales, he worked for several years as a facilities manager for a healthcare company in NJ, then later worked nights as a manager at A&P, and—never one to slow down—he also earned his CDL in his early seventies to drive a school bus as a part-time job.
Robert loved music—especially jazz—and he often filled Saturday mornings and long drives with his favorite musicians. A former local sports standout, he remained a devoted fan who rarely missed his children’s games/meets, and he always showed up as the biggest supporter and/or biggest critic.
In his last years, he suffered from dementia, which led him into assisted living at the care of Trenda Boston and her staff at her in-home facility, King’s Gate Manor in Bowie, MD. This allowed him the around-the-clock professional care he needed while still allowing frequent visits to and from his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert A. and Maggie Bell Vaughn; brothers Arthur Vaughn, Theodore Vaughn, Arvin Vaughn, Marvin Vaughn; and sister Rosa Vaughn Pettis, and nieces Marissa Vaughn and Deirdra Pettis.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley B. Vaughn; his children, Eric M. Vaughn, Kevin M. Vaughn, Craig L. McMullen, and Timothy L. Smith; his siblings Morris Vaughn and JaKal (Carol) Vaughn Hauser; and thirteen grandchildren: Carson A. Vaughn, Emmerson M. Vaughn, Melody M. Vaughn, Analeigha G. Monteiro, Gabrielle T. Vaughn, Jeramiah K.T. Vaughn, Genesis M. Vaughn, Amanda Coles, Adacia V. Smith, Latisha L. Smith, Krystal L. Brown, Shannon Smith, Timothy L. Leak; 16 great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Family and friends are invited to a viewing on Monday, November 3, at Robert Evans Funeral Home in Bowie, MD, from 4:00–7:00 p.m. ET, followed by a memorial service at 7:00 p.m.
A Family Dinner will follow (details to be announced).
Honoring his wishes, ultimately, Robert will be cremated and his ashes spread over the Ohio River. Plans for the scattering of ashes will be shared when available.
