Born on September 23, 1956, in Somers Point, New Jersey, to Mary J. Wade and Rufus A. Wade Sr., Rufus spent his formative years in Pleasantville, New Jersey, where he attended the local public schools. Following his high school graduation, he answered the call to serve his country, entering active duty in the United States Army on February 21, 1975, during the Vietnam era. He served as a light infantryman until his discharge under honorable conditions in July 1976. After completing his military service, Rufus continued his education at Glassboro State College, now known as Rowan University, where he earned his associate degree.
Throughout his life, Rufus held a variety of jobs. Rufus’ early work included positions as a waiter at the Rams Head Inn, overseeing craps and roulette tables as a floor person at the Playboy Casino, and serving as a security guard at the Atlantic City Race Course. He later went on to build a distinguished career with the United States Postal Service, where he made history as the first Black supervisor in Pleasantville, New Jersey. His dedication and strong work ethic propelled him to the position of postmaster. Recognized for his exceptional leadership and expertise, Rufus was selected to serve as a special advisor, helping to improve operations at underperforming postal facilities.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Rufus found joy in life's simple pleasures. A true horse enthusiast and avid horse racing fan, he often spent his Saturdays at Laurel Park Race Course, enjoying one of his favorite pastimes. He also enjoyed lottery scratch-offs, and watching sports, Judge Judy or a true crime program. Above all, he valued spending quality time with his family, creating lasting memories with those he loved most.
Rufus was preceded in death by his loving parents, and his beloved sister, Sheila Spencer.
His memory will forever be cherished by his devoted wife, Yourie Peyton Wade, of Maryland; his loving daughters, Courtney Vaughn (Eric), of Maryland, and Ashley E. Ramsey (Darryll Jr.), of California; his treasured granddaughters, Emmerson Vaughn, Peyton Ramsey, and Lauryn Ramsey; his beloved grandsons, Carson Alexander Vaughn and Darryll Alexander Ramsey III; his brother, Mark Wade (Katherine), of New Jersey; his nephew, Carl Spencer Jr. (Lisa), of New Jersey; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.
Though his earthly journey has come to an end, the memories Rufus created, the milestones he achieved, and the love he shared will remain a lasting part of the lives of those who knew and loved him.
