Mom's Eulogy

Good Morning, For those of you who don't know me, I'm eMily Burton.  On behalf of my dad, my brother and myself, I'd like to thank you all for coming this morning to celebrate my mother's far too short, but certainly meaningful and love-filled life.

No matter what you know her as.. Vickie Thompson, Vickie Burton, Mrs. Burton, Mrs. B, Mama Burton, Aunt Vickie, Vic, Mom, Grandmommy,  or if you really want to get down to it, Victoria Elaine Theresa Thompson Burton,  chances are my mom was really something special to you.  To quote her favorite band, The Beatles, “Other girls were never quite like this.”  It truly is a rarity to find someone so beautiful on the inside and on the outside; someone who truly does put the needs and well-being of those around her before her own.   I have never met someone with a bigger heart.   I am completely certain that my mother's heart took up all the space in her body that her brain didn't occupy.  She cared so deeply for so many people, sometimes people she had never even met.  She was an excellent listener.  You could talk to her about everything or sometimes absolutely nothing.  She always knew the right thing to say to make you feel like everything would be alright.  Or sometimes just the way she listened made you feel that way.  Mom was so proud of all the things all of us did, even when we didn't think much about it.  She made you feel special, like every single one of us was the greatest thing since sliced bread.    

Her faith was such an important part of her life.  We spent a lot of time talking about it, especially in the last several years.  After she died, I came across her daily missal that her parents gave her when she was eleven.  She kept the prayer cards for so many people that preceded her in death in the day for their birthday.  Knowing my mother, I'm sure that she prayed for them and their loved ones on that day and thought about memories of them.  But I also took this message from my mom, she marked their birthdays, not the date of their death. She wanted to remember good memories of them, the times they shared together, not just that they had left this world.

Mom would always tell us that our happiness was the most important thing to her.  Then, she'd interrupt that our safety was the most important thing and happiness was a close second. Because don't you ever forget, Victoria Burton was a first class worrier. 

I know that this is such a hard time for so many of us.  I know I've found myself so paralyzed by grief.  Lately, I have felt such a void in my life, I lack both of the things she wanted most for us, happiness and safety, and much more without my mom, my best friend, and my soul mate.    What we have to try to keep in mind though, was that no matter how hard times were, no matter what life threw at her, whether it was multiple sclerosis, diabetes, my brother's lymphoma, her heart attack, the deaths of loved ones, or the horrible events of the last few months, my mother remained strong in the things that were important to her: love of her friends and family, compassion, patience, hope, and faith.  Even near the end when she had little strength, she would occasionally reach out to comfort those at her bedside.  That woman, there she was literally on her death bed and trying to take care of us.  Truly, the most wonderful woman I will ever meet in my life.

My mom picked out greeting cards based on if they had a nice verse and were sparkly.  If they had both, they were perfect. For her, the mushier the better.  I, on the other hand, am more known for sending humorous cards.  She really was the only one who would occasionally get a mushy one from me.  She'd get all sentimental and give me a big hug and kiss.  I'd rib her that she really was just disappointed in me that it wasn't funny.  So, I wouldn't want to disappoint my mom, so I think I better tell you things I will REALLY miss about her… Counting the number of pictures of my brother to prove to her that he was in fact her favorite because they outnumbered mine, the way she kept EVERYTHING, like every school paper we ever wrote or every sticky note I left her, how she loved anything that sparkled, how she has jewelry EVERYWHERE, how she always moved the ornaments on the Christmas tree after we decorated it, how everyone in our family could tell you the story of Ms. Crow and “crocodile tears,” how she recorded Dancing with Wolves every time it came on, how she got so flustered playing taboo, how she stood like superman, how she loved coffee, but took forever to drink a cup inevitably heating it up several times in the microwave, usually forgetting it was in there until it was cold again, and most of all, I'll miss that she thought I was hilarious, but mainly because, I'll miss her smile and laugh.

While she was in hospice, I came across a card that she gave me for my 24th birthday in a box.  I'd like to end with a quote from it that encompasses the way I feel about my mom.  “Think of.. the way tea fills the curve of a teacup.  In the same way, there is a place in my life shaped like you.”  “This.. space in the middle of my heart that you, and only you, [can] fill.”

We shared so much in growing up - St. Teresa's, Immaculate Conception Academy, first summer jobs at Neisner's downtown DC and of course, the Beatles. Although we didn't stay close after graduation you are a cherished memory for me and all who knew and loved you.

Vicky worked with me over the years I taught at Glenn Dale. She was my biggest supporter! I couldn't have done half the teaching I did without her. She was truly dedicated to the kids. She was a quiet blessing! May her light and spirit continue to shine through all of us who loved her.
