William Eldred McGann

William Eldred McGann, 89, passed away on March 16, 2025 in Severna Park, Maryland. Born on August 24, 1935 to parents Viola Kroll McGann and James Hugh McGann, William (Bill) was loved by family, friends, and pets, and all knew him for his generosity.

Bill began his life near Lonaconing, Maryland and was the youngest of three boys. As a child, he enjoyed walking by the creeks near his home and would join his brothers and neighborhood kids in local ball games. He loved to read and excelled in math. He graduated from Central High School and then attended college at Frostburg State Teachers’ College where he majored in math education.

In adulthood, Bill worked as a middle school math teacher for many years, followed by several years of employment by the Veterans’ Administration. Between these two careers he worked for NASA as an educator on the space program. While at the VA, as a computer programmer, Bill was one of the key personnel working to automate the VA’s system for benefit payments.

In his spare time, Bill enjoyed attending baseball games and playing competitive bridge and was a master bridge player. An avid dog lover, Bill would always have a canine companion by his side. He was a kind and gentle soul who loved to share stories about his nieces and nephew and their children. He was a history buff and had an extensive knowledge of military conflicts.

Bill is survived by his niece, Kathi McGann Flammang and husband Harold Flammang of Arnold, Maryland, nephew Chris McGann of Bowie Maryland, niece Holly McGann Robinson and husband Jim Robinson of Lisbon, Maryland, and eight great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents Bill was preceded in death by his brothers James McGann and Raymond McGann.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, March 28, 2025 at Sunset Memorial Park, 13800 Bedford Road NE, Cumberland, MD, 21502.
