It is with profound sadness that the Bowmansville Vol. Fire Association announces the passing of Doug Grimmer. Doug was a 35-year active member of our Association as well as previously serving with the Chaffee-Sardinia Fire Company.
Doug was a huge part of Bowmansville where he served as President, Vice-President, Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Director for many years. In 1998 Doug was appointed as the first Safety Officer of Bowmansville, a position he held until 2024. Doug was very passionate regarding the safety of our Firefighters and worked to ensure every firefighter returned home safely. Doug served as Chairman of many committees through his time in Bowmansville including Safety, Erie County Fair Fireman’s Day, Country Western Jamboree, Gun Raffle, Installation Banquet, Pole Barn Building Committee, and Back-hall Renovation Committee. In addition to his safety officer role, Doug served as a driver and operator of all our apparatus. He served on our Ladder Truck committee for our first Ladder truck and was currently on the Engine replacement committee to replace 2 Engines. He was a proud member of Bowmansville for many years and his contributions to our organization are far more than could ever be listed.
Doug was a big part of our Dayside crew and when he was not answering alarms, he was often found fixing something around the firehouse or cooking a meal to serve our firefighters. Doug was awarded Fire Fighter of the Year, the Chief’s Award on two occasions and was awarded the Howard Scrace Award in 1995. The Howard Scrace Award is the highest award given at Bowmansville.
Doug was a hardworking member of our Association, and we are forever indebted to him for his time and dedication. Doug was a “Brother” to all of us and he will be sorely missed!
Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Carol and the rest of his family and friends. Rest easy Doug, we’ll take it from here!
