Loree Alan Dean Paulson, an engineer who was the last head of the Worthington Compressor plant in Buffalo, died Sept. 24 in the Greenfields in Lancaster. He was 86.

Mr. Paulson was vice president and general manager of the Worthington plant at Clinton Street and Roberts Avenue when it was closed by its corporate parent in 1987, eliminating about 600 jobs. The plant made machinery for the gas, petroleum, chemical and petrochemical companies. Some of the plant's operations were shifted to an affiliated Dresser-Rand plant in Painted Post, in Steuben County, where Mr. Paulson transferred and remained a vice president until retiring in 1993.

A November 1988 Buffalo News story reported on a reunion of former Worthington workers held in Cheektowaga a year after the plant closed. The story mentioned Mr. Paulson was "warmly received and sat at the head table."

Mr. Paulson was born in Tuxedo, in Orange County, and graduated from Ridgewood High School in New Jersey. He graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, and earned a master's degree in business administration from Western New England University in Springfield, Mass.

He lived in France while serving in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and then began working for Ingersoll-Rand. One of his work assignments took him to Brazil for two years, said his wife, Barbara.

Mr. Paulson served on the Buffalo Waterfront Development Corp. Advisory Board and the Citizens Waterfront Development Committee. He was also a past president of the Harbour Pointe Village Homeowners Association. During his career, he was the recipient of several patents.

In retirement, Mr. Paulson and his wife, who lived in Lancaster, enjoyed traveling the country by motor home.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Paulson is survived by his sons Jack, Mark and Bruce.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 16 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Buffalo.
