She was the beloved wife of the late Howard S. Erb and the cherished daughter of the late Herbert and Lulu (Reitnauer) Rothenberger. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Ray and Russell Rothenberger, and her stepson, William H. Erb.
Janet first began working at The Amity in Amityville, then moved on to Ozan's Manufacturing in Boyertown. Both were apparel manufacturing companies. Janet spent more than 70 years as a devoted Avon representative — a role that became much more than a job. It was a calling rooted in her deep love of people. She treasured her customers, many of whom became lifelong friends. Her visits were more than business transactions; they were heartwarming conversations filled with smiles, laughter, and genuine connection. Janet had a special way of making everyone feel seen and valued — whether she was catching up on family news or delighting someone with a new lipstick or nail color.
She had her own unique sales flair — painting each of her fingernails a different color to showcase the latest shades, and even drawing lipstick swatches on her hands to help customers find their perfect match. Her sparkle wasn’t just in her jewelry (though she loved it plenty!) — it was in her joyful presence, creative spirit, and kind heart.
Her dedication earned her many honors, including consistent rankings in the top three in her district, a place among the top 100 representatives nationwide, and numerous awards and trips — including three to Hawaii, a Caribbean cruise, and even lunch with Avon president Jim Preston. In 2011, she was honored on stage at Madison Square Garden during Avon’s 125th anniversary celebration, and proudly took part in the New York Stock Exchange closing bell ceremony for Avon’s Founders Day that same year.
Janet’s commitment to her community was equally inspiring. In 2007, she was inducted into the Pennsylvania Hall of Fame for voting in every November election for 50 consecutive years — a reflection of the pride she took in civic responsibility.
A lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Boyertown, Janet gave her time and talents freely — helping with church luncheons and sharing her famous homemade chocolate chip cookies. She was also an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW (1960–1998), the Woman’s Club of Boyertown (1963–2000), and the Boyertown Multi-Service, always willing to lend a hand wherever needed.
More than anything, Janet was the heart of her family. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she found deep joy in gathering her family for meals — especially during the holidays — and ensuring no one ever left her home without a tin of cookies. She made everyday moments feel special, whether she was baking, playing Uno with her great-grandchildren, or giving the Wii Gaming System a try. She also cherished her time with her sewing and card clubs, always finding joy in the company of others.
She is survived by her children: Constance D. Gilbert companion of Robert Bosler, David L. Erb, and Joanne L. (Babu) Ranganathan; her grandchildren: Michael Erb, Brian Erb, William Brent Erb, Stephen Gilbert, Jeffrey Erb, and Pamela Erb; and her great-grandchildren: Emily Erb, Sarah Erb, Evvan Erb, Grace Gilbert, Hope Gilbert, Romy Mullins, and Reese Mullins.
Janet's warmth, kindness, and boundless generosity touched countless lives. Her absence leaves a tender space that cannot be filled, but her spirit will continue to shine in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved her.
Friends and family are invited to call from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 12, at Linwood W. Ott Funeral Home, 111 N. Reading Ave., Boyertown, PA. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be held privately.
