Russell Samuel Mertz

Born in St. Marys, PA, he was a son of the late Elsie M. (Matthews) and Charles D. Mertz.

Russell worked as a truck driver for Jones Motor Freight before becoming an Operating Engineer with Local Union #542, from which he retired in 1991. Following his retirement, he continued trucking for the Plain Community of Eastern Lancaster County, a pursuit he loved dearly, along with his years spent operating heavy equipment.

He was a proud life member of Local #542, and for more than 60 years was a well-known dealer of antique country furniture. He could be found most Saturdays, and some weekdays besides, at a local auction.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Marie Painter and Harold Mertz.

Russell is survived by his children: Carol A., wife of David Eckman, of Pleasanton, CA; Barbara J. Balmer of Elverson, PA; Donald R. Mertz of Elverson, PA; and Jane E., wife of Brian Piersol, of Elverson, PA. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services: A visitation will be held Monday, September 21, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., followed by a service at 10:30 a.m., at Christ Lutheran Church, 525 Covered Bridge Road, Oley, PA.

Burial will follow in Oley Spangsville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Russell's name to The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, 3401 Civic Center Blvd., Philadelphia, PA 19104.
