Born in Oldenburg, Germany. He was the last surviving son of Martha Frieda Helene (Harfst) and Friedrich Karl Claussen.
Walter served in the German Army during WWII as a Paratrooper. Captured by the Allies in Anzio, Italy he was brought to the US as a prisoner of war for 2 years.
After the war he worked in Germany for the Post Office for 10 years before immigrating to the US in 1956. He then worked as a Truck Mechanic for, Berman Sales Co for 10 years, Collegeville Equipment, William Penn Equipment Co, Pottstown, John Pfrommer Inc. and at George W. Kugler, Inc. for his last 5 years of work retiring in 1985.
Walter was a life member at the Friendship Hook and Ladder Fire Co., Boyertown, Evergreen Country “Heimatbund” Club in Fleetwood and was a 22 year volunteer at the Boyertown Area Senior Center / The Center at Spring Street with Meals on Wheels. He also enjoyed going to Zern’s Farmers Market and helped with running some of the businesses there.
Walter enjoyed travelling, dancing, and spending time with his family. He had a great sense of humor and was very proud to say he was an American.
He is survived by his children, Eric W. husband of Christiane Claussen of Boyertown, Waltraut widow of Frank Reeser of Landisville, PA, and Christine Caripides of Coatesville. Walter is also survived by 5 grandchildren and was predeceased by his brother August Claussen.
Memorial Services will be held at the Linwood W. Ott Funeral Home, Inc. 111 North Reading Ave. Boyertown, PA. 19512. Saturday, September 13, 2014. At 11:00 AM. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10:00 to 11:00 AM Saturday. Inurnment will be in Fairview Cemetery.
