Anna M Schreiber

January 3, 1939 – January 28, 2024
IN THE CARE OF

Robert Toale & Sons Celebration of Life Center

Anna Maria Schreiber, 85, a long-time New Jersey resident, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 28, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family, in Bradenton, FL.

Born in Hungary in 1939, Anna’s resilience and tenacity brought her to the United States at the young age of 16. Having been dealt a tumultuous life from the start, Anna never let that get in her way. She found joy in all parts of her life, whether it was cooking, gardening, reading or caring for her family, pets & her beloved husband. She had been known to cook meals for anyone and everyone who asked without question. You were hungry? Around Anna Schreiber, that’s not possible, so sit down and eat; “it's fresh”, after all.

Every moment spent with Anna, or as she was well known to family and friends as “Mom Mom”, was filled with love, joy, laughter and lots of food. In her prime, Anna was known for hosting parties and get-togethers for her neighbors, friends, family, coworkers and sometimes even the kind stranger she met at the grocery store. The Schreiber’s “Christmas Eve Party” was always one for the ages, filled with her signature gumbo and guests caroling Christmas tunes alongside the piano well into the early morning hours.

Anna, together with her husband James, owned and operated Schreiber Realty Company, Inc. in Hamilton, New Jersey for over 30 years. As President of Schreiber Realty, Anna was consistently among the Multi-Million Dollar Sales Club members from the Mercer County Board of Realtors. She was loved and respected by her fellow realtors. If you wanted a house, you went to Anna and left with a new home to create memories in, just as she intended.

With great work came great play, and Anna found much joy playing games. Whether it was a weekend in Atlantic City, Las Vegas or the racetrack, playing MGM Slots on her phone, playing her special lottery numbers or watching the Game Show Network, she loved the thrill. And as many of her family knew, tearing her away from a slot machine was like trying to take a candy from a baby, but hey, at least she always won!

Anna often shared stories of her youth and her life with her family, in which she shared moments of why she would never smoke a cigarette, lovely memories of her pet cow and old-fashioned beauty secrets from back in Hungary (wrinkles? non-existent!), and the moment she and her husband fell in love. A love that turned out to be as pure and true as any that can exist.

Their story began when Anna was 18 years old. Only speaking minimal English at the time, Anna was the most beautiful lady in town, constantly having to ward off men who would do anything to have her hand in marriage. It wasn’t until a Hungarian dance, where she and her future husband James locked eyes for the first time, that a love of a lifetime began. In every universe, their souls belong to one another, and they will always find each other. Anna and James got married on September 3rd, 1960, and were together ever since, even after he may have accidentally locked her out of the house one too many times in his older years.

Anna was an avid book lover, spending any free time with her nose in a book or her iPad reading an article. She also adored the outdoors, tending to her flowers, soaking up the sun and enjoying all that nature and God had to give her. Anna loved flowers; it didn’t matter their color or species; if you gave them to her, she would cherish them and find a way to give them a new, prosperous life again and again. Roses, lilies, daffodils, you name it, she loved them. Anna always had 4-6 plants on her dining room table at any given moment and would have been glad to have more.

Anna also had a very strong relationship with God. She relied on Him for support in her darkest times, and He was always there for her. If she couldn’t make it to Sunday Mass, she would turn on the broadcast straight from the Vatican, pray and sing along. Anna’s relationship with Mary was also very special. If there’s one thing she taught those closest to her, is that if they felt scared, upset or sad, to always say a Hail Mary. There is no doubt that Mary and Anna are spending much time together in Heaven, sharing many meals and laughs together.

Anna wouldn’t want us to forget that her and her family were Philadelphia Eagles fans through and through. Through every loss (and there were many!) and through every win, she never gave up hope. But that’s Anna. She never lost her faith, even when it seemed like nothing could get better. She also loved to watch the news. Whether it was CNN and MSNBC, or in other words, “whatever Brian Williams is on”, the news was never not on in Anna’s home. She had to be kept aware of current events and make her positions on politics very clear to whomever she was with. At 6pm, Anna was avidly watching the nightly news while cooking dinner, listening to the melodic voice of her celebrity crush, Mr. Brian Williams.

In her last years, Anna’s beloved dog Mocha, a 9-year-old toy poodle and one of her favorite breeds, was in the center of Anna’s heart. Mocha followed her everywhere, sneaking treats and bites of her cooking more than she needed because she was everything to Anna. All of Anna’s pet’s right from the very start of their lives together never had to suffer through pet food; she gave them meals straight from the table, as they rightly deserved. It’s safe to say no person or animal went hungry in Anna’s presence, a way she captured all our hearts.

Out of all things, togetherness was what Anna loved most. Knowing she could make someone laugh and fill their tummies, being surrounded by those she loved was everything she had strived for. Saying goodbye to Anna was never easy, so the family found it much easier to say, “See you tomorrow” because, without a doubt, we would. Anna loved. For all the trials and tribulations endured, her love never wavered. Anyone could walk into her home and immediately feel safe and loved. She had that effect on people, and it was a feeling we all grew to crave.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, James T. Schreiber; her son, James M. Schreiber; daughter-in-law, Veronica Schreiber; daughter, Linda; 4 grandchildren: LJ, Madison, Monroe & Ariel; 1 great-grandchild; her extended family, The Bobiks; and her beloved dog, Mocha.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that a donation be made in her name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, an organization she has held near and dear to her heart. And of course, to continue to share her memories over a meal with your loved ones for many years to come.
