Charlie was born on July 1st, 1937, in Framingham Massachusetts to Charles and Gladys Long. After graduating from Bowdoin College, he taught high school for several years before joining the family business of R.H. Long Motors in Framingham – the world’s oldest continually owned Cadillac dealership. Charlie went on to run his own dealership, Crest Pontiac, Cadillac, Mazda in Newington, Connecticut before returning to the family dealership where he took over as General Manager when his father Charles Senior retired.
Charlie was a lifelong sportsman with a passion for skiing, sailing, and golf, activities he shared with his wife Susan. He was also a skilled pilot, flying his Cessna throughout New England and beyond. Charlie and Sue’s sailing adventures included living on their sailboat in the Caribbean, a place dear to them both. Charlie was an accomplished skier, he began skiing as a young boy and was a member of the Bowdoin ski team. He enjoyed skiing trips all across the US, in Canada and in France and played golf on countless courses. One of his most memorable rounds of golf was at Turnberry in Scotland. He loved to describe the bunkers which were so deep you had to climb a ladder to get in and out of them.
Charlie was also an avid sports fan, and remained fiercely loyal to his Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins. One of his deepest pleasures was seeing the Red Sox beat the Yankees.
Charlie’s death was preceded by his mother, father and sister. He is survived by his wife, Susan, his daughters Marget, Elise, Kara and Cailtin, niece Dawn Morris and his nephew Scott Barry. He is also survived by five grandchildren. He will be deeply missed for his kind, generous nature and his witty sense of humor.
The family will be scattering his ashes in Newport Harbor, a place where he lived and loved.
