Born on March 22, 1929, in Schenectady, New York, Ed lived a long and fulfilling life marked by dedication to his family, his craft, and his passions. Ed began his career at General Electric immediately after high school, joining as an apprentice. His talent and commitment were quickly recognized when he was named Apprentice of the Year. He went on to work as a draftsman at GE for an impressive 42 years, contributing his skills and precision to countless projects. His logical mind and patient demeanor made him a respected colleague and a trusted professional throughout his career.
A devoted husband and father, Ed shared 56 loving years of marriage with his wife, Catherine (Kay) M. Cackowski. Together they built a warm and supportive home for their children: son Dan Cackowski and daughter Linda Cackowski-Schnell. Ed also welcomed son-in-law Brandon Cackowski-Schnell into the family with open arms. He took great joy in being a grandfather to Ben and Abby Cackowski-Schnell.
Ed’s talents extended far beyond the drafting table. A gifted musician, he taught accordion lessons and played in a polka band for many years. His love of music found its fullest expression on the dance floor at the Polish Community Center in Albany, New York, where he and Kay often danced the polka with joy and energy. A true do-it-yourselfer, Ed had an uncanny ability to fix anything and everything. Whether it was repairing household items or tending to his garden, he approached each task with care and precision. His hands were rarely idle—he found satisfaction in solving problems and creating beauty through hard work.
In retirement, Ed embraced travel with Kay by his side. The two explored national parks across the country and enjoyed visiting casinos together—always seeking new experiences while cherishing each other’s company.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Sophie Cackowski, as well as his sister Irene Cackowski. Ed will be remembered for his intelligence, kindness, patience, and unwavering love for those closest to him. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched through both quiet acts of care and joyful celebrations of life.
May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
