Born in Dayton, Ohio, on May 9, 1948, Mary earned her bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Dayton in 1970. For the first 22 years of marriage, Mary was a military wife, raised her children and provided a sense of stability wherever her family was stationed across Germany and the US. She later built a 20+ year career rooted in service and organization, beginning at the local public library, and later worked at the local educational department, where she organized adult classes. She also worked within different philanthropic organizations and was especially proud of her nine years as an executive assistant at the Indiana Supreme Court, where she retired from in 2016 before moving to Florida.
Mary is survived by her husband of 55 years, Bill Carey; her children, Ellen and Elaine; as well as her brother, Joseph LaForsch; and her sister, Margaret (LaForsch) Schmidt.
Mary enjoyed reading, listening to music, shopping, and traveling, especially when she could learn the history of the places she visited. She appreciated life’s small pleasures, whether that meant a glass of wine or a decadent dessert, and was known for having “just one sip” or “just one bite” of her husband’s or daughters’ drink or dessert. She will be remembered for her kindness, humor, and the care she brought to the people in her life. Mary died from progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a rare neurodegenerative disease.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to [CurePSP - Home] online or at: CurePSP, 325 Hudson Street, 4th Floor, New York, NY 10013.
A celebration of life Mass will be held on June 10, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Lakewood Ranch, Florida.
May Mary rest in peace, while her memory lives on, in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
