Tom was a proud graduate of Eastlake North High School in Eastlake, Ohio, Class of 1967. Shortly after graduation, he served his country honorably in the United States Army, a service he remained deeply proud of throughout his life.
A passionate sports fan, Tom especially loved college football and faithfully cheered for both the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Miami Hurricanes. He was also a lifelong fan of NHRA drag racing and attended the Gatornationals an incredible 43 times alongside his brother, Bill.
In his younger years, Tom was an accomplished athlete who played competitive men’s softball, including competing in the Men’s World Softball Tournament. Later in life, he could often be found enjoying a friendly game of bocce, bowling with friends, or playing a tough hand at the poker table.
Known for his sharp wit, big heart, and colorful way with words, Tom had a personality that left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Around Tom, breakfast might include “cackle berries” and “sow belly,” just two examples of the many expressions that made conversations with him memorable and full of laughter. Pop also had great moves on the dance floor and loved showing them off while dancing “The Freddy.”
Tom was proud of his humble roots and was someone who never hesitated to stand up for the common man. He became a respected and active community advocate within his retirement village in Sarasota, where he built lasting friendships and continued to advocate for others.
Tom is survived by his son, Vince Thomas; his daughter, Michelle Renia Twitchell; and his four beloved grandchildren, Clair and Sid Hulsman, and Reeve and Mason Twitchell. He is also survived by his brother, William (Bill) Hulsman.
A celebration of life is being planned and will be held in Willoughby, Ohio. Tom’s remains will be laid to rest at the Sharpe Avenue Cemetery in Willoughby. Additional details will be shared with family and friends once arrangements are finalized.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that thoughts or memorial gifts be made in Tom’s honor to
