Even as a boy, Ben sought out educational opportunities, especially in the maths and sciences. He moved to Cyprus to obtain secondary education at the Melkonian Educational Institute, an Armenian boarding school with very high academic standards. He received his diploma in 1952, then attended the University of London in England and received a BSc in Engineering in 1956. He continued his education at the University of Buffalo, obtaining his Masters in Science in 1962. After teaching in Ghana for several years, he completed a Doctor of Education degree at the State University of New York (SUNY-Buffalo) in 1972.
As much as Ben sought out education for himself, he also sought to share his knowledge with students throughout the world. He was a professor of math at the University of Kumasi in Ghana and at the Hong Kong Polytechnic. For thirty-five years, he was a teacher of mathematics in Ontario at schools in Barrie, Welland, and Burlington. He was a well-known math teacher and tennis coach at Bramalea Secondary High School for over twenty years, until his retirement in 1995.
Although Ben was an enthusiastic gardener who maintained a rose and a vegetable garden every summer, he was an avid traveler and toured dozens of countries in Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia in his lifetime. He was fluent in Armenian, English, Greek, and French. An avid swimmer and walker, he was active well into his eighties.
Ben passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 4, 2023. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather and is survived by his wife, Marie, to whom he was married for over fifty years, and his daughters Salpy and her husband Martin and Sylvia and her husband Jon, as well as by his son Paul and his wife Taye. He has three granddaughters: Emily, Ava, and Alina.
PRAYER
Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
O Christ, Son of God, forbearing and compassionate, have compassion, in your love as our creator, upon the souls of your servants who are at rest, especially upon the soul of your servant BENJAMIN PAMBOUKIAN for whom we are offering these prayers. Be mindful of them in the great day of the coming of your kingdom. Make them worthy of mercy, of expiation and forgiveness of sins. Glorify them and reckon them with the company of your saints at your right hand. For you are Lord and creator of all, judge of the living and of the dead. And to you is befitting glory, dominion and honor, now and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
