Peacefully and surrounded by her family, Betty passed away on March 26 at the age of 95. Beloved mother to daughter Margaret and son-in-law Jim, Nana to Catharine (Dave) and David, and Great-Nana to Elizabeth and Rebecca. She was predeceased by her husband Jack and two sons, John and Chuck. Fondly remembered by brother Jack (Marilyn).
Betty was born in January 1927 in Hamilton, the fourth of James and Nellie’s eight children. She moved to Toronto at a young age and lived there for most of her life. Betty was devoted to her family and friends. Most nights her telephone line was a busy signal as she chatted with them daily. She had a close relationship with sisters Kay and Lou. Betty and best friend Flo could be found at the Eaton Centre every Thursday for decades. Many laughs and lunches were enjoyed with friend Susie. Betty took on a grandmother role for the Romanelli and Rosemann families, visiting them in Florida and St Louis.
Summers were spent at the cottage Betty and Jack built on Lake Kasshabog. Happy days of swimming, boating and blueberry picking. She taught her grandchildren to make sun tea and pompom crafts, spoiling them with simple treats. In their retirement years, they wintered in Melbourne Beach, Florida where many more friendships were made.
Betty gave generously of her time and volunteered with a variety of organizations, including the IODE, 48th Highlanders Chapter, and numerous groups at both United and Presbyterian church communities. She spent her evenings knitting baby clothes for Women’s College Hospital and volunteered for many years at the hospital gift shop.
Special thanks to the staff at Southbrook Retirement Home for their loving care of Betty.
