It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the Flisar family announce the passing of their loved one, Mirko Flisar, at the age of 83, at Etobicoke General Hospital, following a 6 year difficult battle with Alzheimer’s, with family by his side throughout his final days.
Loving husband of Anica. Cherished father of Vesna and Jozica (Andrew Ryan). Beloved grandfather to Kristina. Dear memory of Mirko will be held in the hearts of many relatives and friends in Canada and Slovenia.
His childhood was during WWII, and he was a young man in the Navy. He immigrated to Canada in 1952 and enjoyed telling stories to his family about his younger years in Slovenia. He also enjoyed working with friends at McDonell Douglas, welding work for building airplanes, for 30 years. He enjoyed watching the airplanes that flew by his home in Malton in the summer days, saying to his family "there goes the airplane that I built!"
He enjoyed being a home handyman for his family and friends. His constructions in the homes of his family will always be a symbol of his love for them. He enjoyed watching and had great fun talking to and phoning family and friends about the Stanley Cup hockey games, World Cup soccer games, and Olympics, cheering on his favourite teams until the late hours of night. He also loved dancing and singing Slovenian polka songs, playing the game of Bacci ball, chess games, and talking with family and friends at his home and their homes and also at the Slovenian Farm in Bolton. He loved the wonderful Slovenian meals and desserts cooked by his wife, Anica, each day, but most especially schnitzel at Christmas time and Easter time with family celebrating.
He worked hard to take care of his family, who will deeply miss him. He taught his family well with his skills and love of math, creativity in art and dancing, and creativity of handyman work, as well as his enjoyment of gardening, reading, and writing, which has now followed him into the heart of his loving granddaughter, Kristina, whom he only got to know before his battle with Alzheimer's memory loss.
His family and friends are deeply saddened as the light of Mirko's life has gone, but are comforted that the light of Mirko's memory has come back to him with God in heaven. The pains he suffered with Alzheimer's remains in the hearts of family and friends, but the loving memory of Mirko (also called Ata, Imrek, and Grandpa) will endure and survive forever.
Family and friends may gather at the Andrews Community Funeral Centre, 8190 Dixie Road, Brampton (North of Steeles Avenue) on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm, for visitation.
A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church, 739 Brown's Line, Toronto on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at 11am, with reception to follow.
Burial at Assumption Catholic Cemetery, 6933 Tomken Road, Mississauga.
