FREEMAN, Barbara Anna Stover, 88, passed from this world on February 22, 2015, after a long battle with COPD. She leaves behind her five children; James R. Freeman (Carla Jimenez) of St. Petersburg, Jane Freeman of Berkley, Calif., John Freeman (Mary Murphy) of Yakima, Wash., Jean Priest (Michael Priest) of Sarasota, Judy Whaley of Plant City; sister, Mary Stover Brown of Tampa; six beloved grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nine nieces and nephews.
Born in Detroit, Mich., on October 27, 1926, Barbara received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Michigan State University. While raising her children, she lived in Michigan, Ill., New York and Massachusetts before moving to Tampa in 1969. Barbara returned to school for her Master’s in Education from the University of South Florida. During her nearly 30 year teaching career, she taught math and science to thousands of students in middle schools and adult night school across Hillsborough County. When she retired from teaching, Barbara built her dream house in Plant City, where she raised horses and held court. Barbara was an intelligent and independent woman who loved life and lived it fully on her own terms. She loved art, fashion, and travel, and she loved to read – especially mysteries. A true animal lover, Barbara was a member of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse, attending horse shows and other equestrian events. She spent many years working with TRAVERSE Kids in Thonotossassa, teaching horseback riding to youngsters with special needs. At 70 years old, Barbara rode her horse in Plant City’s Strawberry Festival parade.
In lieu of flowers, Barbara and her family ask that donations in her memory be sent to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Mounted Posse. P.O. Box 3703, Brandon 33509. A private service will be held for the family.
