Bruce M. Anthony, DVM, passed away from cancer on May 21, 2019 at his home in Lithia, Florida surrounded by his family and draped in his dogs.

Bruce died on the 24th anniversary of his graduation from University of Florida School of Veterinary Medicine; a fitting end. Being a veterinarian was the joy and meaning of Bruce’s life and his many clients, both 2 legged and 4, were indeed his extended family. He owned the Mobile Vet Clinic of Brandon (FL) and served the greater Brandon area for over 19 years. He grew up in Swampscott and Lynn, MA where his love of hockey began at age 7 in Pee Wee and Bantam Hockey and being a part of the newly formed Lynn Jets in the 1960’s and the fledgling North Shore Bantam Hockey League. After graduating from Pickering Junior High School, Bruce continued playing hockey at the Groton School (’71) and Dartmouth College (’75). Returning to Lynn, he continued playing hockey and began working in the wholesale lumber business until the late 1980’s when he made a career change to pursue his passion for working with animals.

Bruce was the son of the late Keith and Marian (Ellis) Anthony and is survived by his sister, Carol Anthony of King of Prussia, PA; his local family of Aasia Dastgir, Victoria Leveson, Cheri White, and Jean Guyol; Bill Hawkins; dear family friend, Ann Miller of Framingham, MA; and many beloved cousins in both Canada and the U.S. Bruce also leaves a network of devoted Tampa Bay Lightning fans with whom he shared many memories over the past decade; and finally he leaves his other passion, the many flowering trees and shrubs he planted around his home to reflect the beauty and joy of the life he loved.

A Celebration of Life visitation will be held from 11:00-1:00 pm, Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Stowers Funeral Home, 401 W Brandon Blvd. Guests are encouraged to share stories while at the celebration for Bruce.

I meet Dr Anthony when we moved to the area over two years ago. The minute I met him I knew his passion for animals, his kind touch and informative knowledge he shared with me that visit. He also was there for us when our loving Duke had to be put down on my second visit, his comfort and time he gave to us at that time was just what we needed.

I was getting ready to bring our Lil Lou in for her annual visit when I discovered he had passed, this was an emotional moment for me, as I am sure for many others that came to his practice. I pray for comfort and offer my sincere sympathies for the loss of your beloved Dr Bruce. May he Rest In Eternal Peace.

Dr. Anthony will be greatly missed by our family. He has been our Vet for over thirteen years. There were many times he saw us after hours when one of our fur babies had an emergency. He truly loved animals. May he Rest In Peace.

Dear Doc,
4 years ago, when I was only 4 months old, you saved my life by performing an emergency op on me, it was a weekend, late at night, at your home and just you and my human father - only angels do something like this. I am still here, you are not, I wish the doctors could have done for you what you did for me – you are my hero! You were always loving and kind to me and my siblings - I will never forget you, and I know that we will meet again, since “All Dogs/Docs go to Heaven”. Yours eternally grateful Bernese Remington “Steele” with sister Princess, and late siblings Miao-Miao, Artemus “Prime” and Zach, along with my humans, the Whitings. Our deepest sympathies go out to your family, your staff and everybody who had the privilege to know you.

It takes a very special person to show such love, kindness and compassion to all of God's creatures. Dr. Anthony had a way of bringing calm to the darkest of situations and the passion for his profession was contagious. Charlie & Charlotte will miss his kisses!! Prayers for peace for all who loved him.

Though Bruce and I did not keep in touch, we were classmates and share that bond. I am sorry to hear of his passing and I know all our class feels the same. Molly Caldwell. University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine Class of 1995.

Although I was a classmate of Bruce’s in vet school and we have not kept in touch since graduation, he touched my life for the 4 years at FL and I have thought of him often since. I know he will be missed.

I’m so sad about the passing of Dr. Anthony. My dogs and cat and I knew him for about three years. My newest rescue pup was very sick and I took him to 5 different area vets and they all misdiagnosed him. I thought I was going to lose my precious baby. Then I found a recommendation for Dr. Anthony and even though he was 45 minutes away I made an appointment and took my Griffin to see him. Dr. Anthony listened very patiently to everything we’ve been through and waited quietly while I cried through it all. He then said that because Griffin was so frightened he didn’t think it was necessary to touch him because he knew exactly what to do. He gave us medication and within 24 hours Griffin’s symptoms were gone and he was a happy puppy. We will miss Dr Anthony so much. Many blessings to his family & friends. God bless...
