Jack was born in Waycross, GA, on November 4, 1938. He graduated from Waycross High School in 1956. He then attended Georgia Tech where he earned his Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering. The research he did for his thesis resulted in the blue dye that NASA used in the suites of our Apollo astronauts in order to protect them from gamma radiation. He went on to do many things and was truly a “Jack of all trades”. He worked as a professor, a college counselor, a professional bass fisherman, a fishing guide, and a business owner in the boat and car industry.
Jack met the love of his life, Rose Marie Popham, when he was only 15 years old. They were married on June 10, 1961. Jack and Rose made the move to Tampa, FL in 1968 when he took a position at the University of South Florida. They lived a life full of love and laughter in their beautiful home on the Hillsborough River with their children, grandchildren and countless friends.
He spent most of his free time hunting and fishing and was the best storyteller ever known. His fishing talent earned him a spot in 4 Bassmaster Classics and 2 All American fishing tournaments. He was also known as one of the 100 “Living Legends of American Sports Fishing”. He took his teaching background a step farther and truly took joy in teaching the next generation all about the outdoors and how to respect God’s creation.
