

BUTLER, Charles G., 89, of Valrico, previously of Harvard, MA and Glen Burnie, MD, entered into rest Monday evening, January 26, 2015 at LifePath Hospice Care Center, Sun City Center, Ruskin, FL. He was the son of C. Gordon and Kathleen (Pray) Butler the oldest of three children born in Jamaica, Queens, NY. PopPop as family and friends called him, was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn (Prenzlow) who passed away in February, 2010; his brother, Robert of Syossett, NY; and both his parents. Charlie served in the U.S. Army, 86th Infantry Division, WWII during which he received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, American Campaign, WWII Victory Medals. Charlie graduated from St. Johns College in Brooklyn, NY and received his masters degree and CPA as well. He taught dance with the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in NY to earn extra money and worked at Schraffts Restaurant in Manhatten, NY where he met his future wife Evelyn. Married in 1951 he was active in Junior Achievers of Maryland and with Holy Trinity Church and School in Glen Burnie, MD. In the late 1960s through the mid 1970’s Charlie was instrumental in establishing the first computer systems at both the Boston, MA Police Department and at Boston University. After retiring from BU, Charlie worked doing tax preparation H &R Block and then as the Harvard, MA Veterans Agent. He took much pride in helping veterans and their families receive their needed and deserved services. He was acknowledged as well by the Town of Harvard, MA and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as Veteran of the Year on 11/11/2009. PopPop leaves his two children, Janet (Maury) Carlin of Milford, MA and Kenneth (Syndi) of Valrico, FL with whom he resided the last 4 1/2 years; six grandchildren, Marsha (Nigel) Birtwistle of Hopkinton, MA, Michael (Joy) Carlin of Shrewsbury, MA, Matthew (Leah) Carlin of Milford, MA, Logan (Sammantha) Butler of Valrico, FL, Gerrit Butler and Margo Butler of Valrico, FL; great-granddaughters, Trinity Birtwistle, Brooke Birtwistle of Hopkinton, MA; sister, Ellen Quinn of Clermont, FL; ten nieces and nephews. During his time living in Valrico PopPop made many new friends especially Mary, his morning coffee friends and the wonderful crew at Dunkin Donuts. He also enjoyed the company of many of Bell Shoals Church of Christ parishioners. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2015 at Stowers Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Graveside services and burial will take place at a later time in Groton, MA where he will be buried next to his wife of 60 years.
