Eugene Robert MacBride

If you ever met Gene Robert MacBride, you were immediately drawn to his magnetic personality, infectious laugh, and incredible love of life! He embraced every moment—from his love of pickles and peppers, to his beautiful English Lab Maggie, his devoted wife Michelle, and his amazing son Brian. His enthusiasm for life was contagious, and his joy was impossible to miss!

When it came to food, Gene appreciated a perfectly cooked steak, fresh sushi, and great Italian cuisine. But nothing compared to his favorite made-to-order sandwich from Bonfatto's Italian Market & Corner Cafe in State College. The spicier, the better—that was always Gene's motto.

Music was Gene's passion, and his son gave him the perfect Father's Day gift—a "RockFather" T-shirt—which quickly became one of his favorite possessions. He proudly wore it to countless concerts, including Metallica, AC/DC, The Eagles, Black Crowes, Led Zeppelin, Scorpions, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and many more. If you ever attended a concert with Gene, you knew you'd never find him sitting in his seat. He was always on his feet, rocking out to the music, pumping his fist to the beat, singing along, and high-fiving anyone who crossed his path. His energy was as unforgettable as his smile!

Gene and Brian shared an extraordinary father-son bond. They were not only father and son, but true friends. They laughed together, shared a love of music, and treasured every moment they spent together. Brian was Gene's greatest pride and joy, and Gene never missed an opportunity to tell others how much he loved and was proud of his son. Their bond was one of unconditional love, respect, and friendship—a connection that will forever remain in Brian's heart.

In his early years, Gene developed his passion for golf by caddying at a golf course in Lancaster, PA. Before college, Gene spent three years serving his country in the Air Force Special Operations Unit. He then earned his business degree from Penn State University, where he became a lifelong Nittany Lions fan. It seemed only fitting that, as a proud Leo, he truly could "hear him roar" through his booming laughter.

Gene enjoyed an accomplished career in procurement that took him around the globe. He often joked that he had worked on every continent except Antarctica. Among his favorite destinations were Australia and, as he would say with a grin, "Jamaica, mon!" His international career began with Alcoa in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After more than 30 years of worldwide travel, he retired and moved to Florida. Retirement, however, lasted only two months before he accepted a position with Mosaic. After another eight and a half years with Mosaic, Gene retired for good a few months before turning 72.

Retirement suited him well. He spent his days golfing, taking guitar lessons, recertifying in scuba diving, and cheering on his beloved Penn State Nittany Lions at Beaver Stadium.

One of Gene's greatest blessings was the love story he shared with Michelle. Their whirlwind romance led to an unforgettable proposal at a Tampa jewelry store, where Gene got down on one knee with champagne waiting to celebrate her "yes."

He then surprised Michelle with their first wedding ceremony on New Year's Eve 2022 on the dock of dear friends Helle and Todd in St. Pete Beach. But Gene wasn't finished creating fairy-tale moments. They later celebrated Michelle's dream beach wedding in St. Pete, with Maggie proudly serving as flower girl. Michelle secretly arranged for a bagpiper to play on the beach in honor of Gene's Scottish heritage—a surprise that deeply touched him. The celebration continued with a romantic European cruise, creating memories they would cherish forever.

Gene's sense of humor was legendary. One of his favorite playful corrections came whenever someone spelled his last name "McBride" instead of "MacBride." With his trademark smile, he would say, "We're Scottish... but God bless the Irish!"

Gene lived boldly, loved deeply, laughed often, and never met a stranger. Whether he was traveling the world, playing a round of golf, cheering on Penn State, dancing at a concert, or simply making those around him laugh, he left an impression that will never fade.

Though Gene has taken his final bow, the music he brought into the lives of others will never stop playing. His laughter, his love, and his unforgettable spirit will echo for generations, and his song will forever live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
